A number of Liverpool fans have hit out at ESPN pundit Alejandro Moreno after he claimed that the Reds could “do better than Mohamed Salah” in terms of attacking options.

He was speaking to ESPN [via Tribuna] when he claimed that it may be in the Reds’ best interests to sell the Egyptian attacker in the near future, saying: “I’m going to say you can do better than Mohamed Salah. There is a player out there that could be far more influential than Mohamed Salah if you make the right choice from here onto the future.” His unflattering assessment of the 27-year-old was later posted on Twitter by @AnfieldEdition.

Salah has been hugely prolific for Liverpool since joining the Reds three years ago, with 91 goals in 144 appearances for the club. He has either won or shared the Premier League Golden Boot in each of the last two years and, as his team’s top scorer for the current campaign with 20 goals, he is only three behind the division’s leading marksman Jamie Vardy.

The Egyptian had come in for criticism over his apparent selfishness when not squaring the ball to Sadio Mane during the 3-0 win at Burnley early in the season, instead taking on an unsuccessful shot himself, but his consistently high scoring figures illustrate his importance to Liverpool’s team. These Reds fans on Twitter were not impressed with Moreno’s words on the Egyptian, who one Kopite stated was a better player than his Senegalese team-mate at Anfield:
