A number of Liverpool fans have hit out at former Premier League striker Jonathan Walters after he tweeted (via @JonWalters19) that the season should be cancelled if an increased spread of coronavirus leads to matches in the competition being played behind closed doors.
If the Coronavirus spreads… We should just cancel the Premier League and start afresh next season.
What do we all think?…You can’t play matches behind closed doors.
Football is what it is because of the fans and without them, the game isn’t the same.— Jonathan Walters (@JonWalters19) March 9, 2020
According to Football London, sports broadcasters and governing bodies are due to meet today to discuss the possibility of Premier League matches being played without fans in attendance in an attempt to stop the spread of a virus that, according to Sky News, has infected 280 people in the United Kingdom and resulted in three deaths in the country.
Walters, a Birkenhead-born boyhood Everton supporter who told The Irish Times last week that he would like to see Liverpool winning the Premier League this year, argued on Twitter that football “isn’t the same” without fans and feels that the season shouldn’t continue if supporters are not allowed to attend matches. However, with Jurgen Klopp’s team 25 points clear at the summit and requiring just two more wins to be crowned champions, these Reds fans on Twitter slammed the 36-year-old’s claims, with a couple of Kopites calling him a “bitter blue”:
Said like a true bitter blue
