A number of Liverpool fans admitted to feeling quite emotional after adopted club anthem ‘You’ll Never Walk Alone’ was played simultaneously across multiple radio stations throughout Europe in a gesture of solidarity during the current coronavirus crisis.

As noted by Liverpool Echo, numerous radio stations across the continent agreed to play the Gerry & the Pacemakers song in an attempt to show unity and raise spirits in the face of COVID-19. According to Glasgow Live, the idea was the brainchild of Dutch radio presenter Sander Hoogendoorn, who encouraged others in the industry to join him in playing the song at the same time in a demonstration of defiance and togetherness.

‘You’ll Never Walk Alone’ originated from the 1945 musical Carousel and was covered in 1963 by Liverpudlian band Gerry and the Pacemakers, scoring them a number one hit. Having been played for several weeks at Anfield, the home fans embraced it and adopted it as an anthem of their own. In the words of music writer Paul du Noyer, “it is a song of perseverance and endurance”. [via The Independent]
