Liverpool have joined the race to sign PSV Eindhoven winger Cody Gakpo, according to transfer insider Dean Jones.

The 23-year-old, who has provided 30 goal and assist contributions in 24 matches this season, had been previously linked with moves to Arsenal and Manchester United, but Liverpool are reportedly also in the hunt to secure his signature.

“They have watched him and they have monitored him very closely, as closely as most other teams have so far. They just haven’t been linked with him as frequently,” Jones told GIVEMESPORT.

“Now, I think it depends really on how their squad shapes up for the return to action as to whether they will be likely to go for him.”

Former Netherlands midfielder Theo Janssen recently praised the winger, claiming that he will be a huge player for his national side for years to come.

“That boy (Gakpo) has everything,” Janssen told NOS.

“Fine feeling for the ball, a good through ball, dribbles and is strong between the lines.

“I really enjoy him. He is going to be an important player for the Orange squad.

“He is ready to be in the base of the Orange squad. I would definitely draft him. There are other options, but they are not as effective as him.”

Our thoughts on Gakpo to Liverpool…

Whilst Gakpo is clearly a talented player with a bright future, Liverpool have other priorities which need addressing.

Luis Diaz, Diogo Jota and Darwin Nunez are all capable of playing on the left side of attack, where Gakpo usually operates, but the need for a central midfielder is far more urgent.

Jude Bellingham has been linked, and with a reported asking price of £130m, signing both the Englishman and Gakpo may be beyond the capabilities of Liverpool’s transfer budget.
