According to The Athletic’s David Ornstein, Liverpool are “exploring” a potential move for RB Leipzig star Dominik Szoboszlai this summer.

Liverpool are in desperate need of reinforcements this summer after struggling to maintain their high expectations in the Premier League and on the European stage.

Jurgen Klopp and his new sporting director Jorg Schmadtke will be working hard over the summer to identify players who can come into the successful squad and bring them back to life next season.

The Reds have already secured their first summer signing with former Brighton and Hove Albion midfielder Alexis Mac Allister joining the Merseyside outfit in a £35m deal.

Indeed, the World Cup winner is a great signing for Klopp to meet his ambitions of building the next generation of success in the centre of the pitch, however, it will take more than just one player to repair the issues starting to chip away at Anfield.

Now a reliable source has revealed a huge move for the club; Ornstein took to Twitter on Wednesday to confirm that Liverpool have met with representatives of Szoboszlai:

“Liverpool exploring move for Dominik Szoboszlai of RB Leipzig. #LFC met his camp this week; latest attacking mid to be considered. Unclear if it develops due to price but is desired profile. Unrelated to potential Carvalho loan”

Our thoughts on Liverpool’s interest in Szoboszlai…

The Hungarian ace has become a popular prospect amongst Premier League football fans with both Arsenal and Newcastle United also linked with interest in the talented playmaker.

Whilst the attacking threat may be the least of Liverpool’s worries at present, Szoboszlai is an attractive prospect due to his vast versatility and ability to quickly adapt to several roles on the pitch.

Over his short career so far, the 22-year-old has a wealth of experience playing in central midfield and attacking midfield, as well as in the wide forward position leaning mostly on the right side, making him a potential heir to Mohamed Salah’s role in the future.

As per FBref, Szoboszlai ranks in the top 20% of his positional peers across the top five European leagues for assists, shot-creating actions, pass completion, progressive passes, blocks and clearances, displaying his attacking-minded strengths.

It is no secret that Klopp is a huge admirer of players who possess a diverse skill set and a good attitude towards adapting to the needs of the team, so it makes perfect sense that the Liverpool boss would be keen on the Leipzig sensation.

With that being said, it is reported that triggering Szoboszlai’s €70m (£60m) release clause will no long be an option as of tomorrow, so it is now likely that Liverpool will try to negotiate a fee with the Bundesliga club or need to wait until January.
