According to Fabrizio Romano, Liverpool are attempting another approach to secure the services of former director of football Michael Edwards.

Liverpool are about to go through a monumental change as they prepare to lose Jurgen Klopp and his entire back-room staff at the end of the season and there is no doubt that FSG will be feeling as anxious as the fans about the future.

The German coach has been one of the most successful managers that Liverpool have ever seen and has become a huge part of the club’s culture during his nine years at Anfield, so it will be not only incredibly difficult to replace him but the people surrounding him who have played their part in building a winning culture.

Indeed, the manager search has been one of the hottest topics in recent weeks since Klopp announced his departure, however, another big role will be left vacant when the summer transfer window opens, and that is the director of football position that has recently opened up after Jorg Schmadtke’s exit.

Now Italian journalist Fabrizio Romano has reported today that FSG will make another approach to reinstate the mastermind behind Klopp’s super team.

Romano tweeted on X:

“EXCL: Liverpool owners want to give one last try to bring Michael Edwards back to the club.

“FSG want Edwards to take over football and put new structure in place, including new sporting director.

“Edwards has currently shown NO sign of saying yes — but #LFC will try again.”

He then followed up this tweet with further details:

“More on Liverpool plans. FSG want new structure to be decided as soon as possible, it won’t take long.

“Final attempt for Michael Edwards with an answer soon… or they will move on in March.

“This is crucial as #LFC want new structure before appointing new manager.”

Should Liverpool chase Michael Edwards?

There is no doubt that Michael Edwards became somewhat of a cult hero for Liverpool supporters as he played a huge part in not only bringing in some of the best talent in Europe, but also orchestrating masterclass sales to ensure that Liverpool were in a position of financial gain at all times.

The acquisition of Andrew Robertson, Mohamed Salah, Sadio Mane and Virgil van Dijk took Edwards from the invisible man behind the scenes to a popular name in the football community, making him one of the most highly respected sporting directors in the business.

Having said that, it has been reported on more than one occasion that Edwards has rejected a return to the Merseyside giants already as he is keen to focus on the consultancy business that he started after leaving Liverpool in the summer of 2022.

However, it is clear that FSG are not giving up without a fight and are hoping that they can make the Southampton-born mastermind an offer he cannot refuse to get back on board for the next chapter post-Klopp.

Whilst Liverpool would massively benefit from the return of Edwards this summer to determine how bright the future can be without Klopp and his team, FSG should not put themselves up for ransom and rest on their laurels by waiting for the 44-year-old.

There is a lot of work to be done to acquire the right people to work behind the scenes at the club and pursuing a sporting director who has little interest or desire for a return makes very little sense with only a few months remaining to get a replacement in place.
