Former Liverpool full back Josemi has announced his retirement from professional football at the age of 36. The Spaniard was bought from Spanish side Malaga very soon after Rafa Benitez took over as manager in 2004 and was part of the Champions League squad that won famously in Istanbul in 2005, although he was an unused substitute in the final.

The right back spent just 18 months at Anfield after he left in January 2006 in a swap deal for Villarreal’s Jan Kromkamp but the Champions League win will live long in his memory. His only medals in Europe during his career were the Champions League and European Super Cup he won with Liverpool, discounting the Intertoto Cup win he had with Malaga in 2003. Josemi announced his retirement on social media in a statement which said:

“There comes a time to say goodbye. To put an end to my career and say goodbye to what has been my life. Eight clubs, 351 games and a title, but above all, a million experiences that I can never forget.”

The Spaniard finished his career playing in the Indian Super League for Atletico Kolkata where he won the league title in 2014/15 and was voted the competitions most valuable player.
