Liverpool schoolboy surpasses Rooney record – and he’s a red

|

Liverpool schoolboy Gerard Garner has surpassed a record set by Wayne Rooney which was believed to be unbeatable. In the same Under 11s team as Rooney, Garner broke the 72 goals in the season record set by Rooney in the 1996/97 season. The 11 year old took the record with two games to spare in the season after bagging his 73rd against Macclesfield at Deepdale in a Under 11s North-West Cup final.  Garner said to the Daily Mirror:

“I never thought I would get anywhere near the record at the start of the season. I didn’t even know there was one until much later. I’m only part of the team. I want to thank my team-mates for helping me break the record and those who coached me. I couldn’t have done it without them.”

A record at Under 11s level is not the only thing Garner has in common with Rooney, he goes to the same primary school, Our Lady & St Swithin’s primary in Croxteth, as the Manchester United striker went to, but their is also one crucial difference between the pair, Garner is a Liverpool supporter rather than a Blue. An interesting name to look out for in a few years time.
