Fabio Coentrao: Our next left back?

|

With ever increasing speculation linking Liverpool’s Emiliano Insua to a move to Italy, the question remains who would be his ideal replacement.

With the rumour mill and silly season of names afoot throughout the different sites and blogs one possible name that springs to mind is that of Fabio Coentrao.

A Portuguese international that was voted one of the outstanding players of the World Cup by both L’Equipe and Marca, Fabio was selected for Carlos Quieroz’s squad of 23 for the final stages in South Africa, starting as left back ahead of another adapted player Duda. He played in all the matches and displayed good overall performances, in an eventual last 16 exit.

On 2 December 2009, having played some matches for Benfica as a left back, Coentrao scored his first goal in European competition , against FC BATE Borisov of Belarus in a 2–1 away win in the Europa League. Last season was a breakthrough year, appearing in a total of 43 official games, as the club won the league and the Portuguese league cup; he ended the season in style, as he was voted Portuguese league breakthrough player of the year.

His form has obviously not gone amiss with the big teams of Europe with reports linking him to such teams as Manchester City, Real Madrid, Bayern Munich and also Chelsea.

To release Fabio Coentrao, Benfica were asking for £25 million, the value of his cancellation clause, but they are allegedly prepared to negotiate a deal to allow him to continue his progression.

With top European sides watching his every move it is only a matter of time before he moves away and depending which article you read, he is being targeted by Hodgson and is said to be keen on the transfer as it would guarantee him first team football, but he has also stated he would love to play football for a great club with great tradition, with the possibility of a reduced fee and loaning Benfica a couple of our youngsters, could he be heading our way?

Born in Hillingdon in Middx in 1970 i`ve been supporting Liverpool since i was 7 when my nan brought me my first shirt.
The great old days seem far away from when i was a boy but hopefully good things are on the horizon.
Currently living in Ireland i am a member of the "Moate Liverpool supporters Club" of which make yearly tours to watch at least 1 game.

I think he’s well out of our price range.

  • Decky says:

a reduced fee would still be 15-20m , so not a hope in hell of this happenning

  • me says:

i’m not so sure (but still hopeful)

    good world cup= expensive player
    and
    yanks= lack of transfer funds

not a chance in hell in less we have been taken over, but thats not happening or is it?

As so often Benfica ask for silly money. Poor lad, has to stay in the Portuguese League until he’s out of contract or Real Madrid get in a new chairman.

This kid can run! Nowadays I’m resigned to waiting. Waiting to see if all these tantalizing linkages we have ever materialize. 🙁

  • liverbird says:

its true he will be out of our range, lets see if new owners comes in, or is Martin Broughton just playing with our emotions. he should just come out and tell us the truth, isn’t today mid Julyish no word of any bids coming in

I have a question totally off-topic, but i feel you guys probably know more than most people on other sites, so I’ll give it a go.

Q: Is Jonjo expected to go straight into the first team? Also, what position is he most suited for? Thanks.

  • Mister says:

Jonjo is not expected to go straight into the first team. Don’t think he is ready for it the first season, and Mr. Hodgson isn’t known for gambling on the youngsters. He is a natural attacking central midfielder who is equally adept to playing defensive midfielder. But there is high hopes for this one, he looks like a fantastic prospect.

    aquilani – 20
    gerrard – 40
    maxi – 5
    ruiz – 12
    torres – 70
    milan – 5

come .. fight with over 200 million team value.. you naver walk alone..

  • Brian says:

Yeah, great team Anakjin. However, the rules limit the starting eleven to eleven players. If we can some how figure out how to field twelve, you can be the manager.

  • samuel charles says:

WHERE YOU GET MILAN AT 5 FOR WHEN HE IS VALUED AND CAME OF A FREE? WHAT A MUG,,,

Torres value is around that, maxi again was not a 5 million buy, he came on a free and we paid his dispute with atletico! he was never valed at 5 mill? agger was not 12 mill, he was brought for 6 mill and trust me if he was sold now he would go for more than a shite horse fee of 12, if upson the 31 year old mug played for england and is worth 15mill then agger os worth 20 plus! riena came for a snip at 6 mill, and now you can never put 20 mill on his value, he is worth twice that, your talking about the 2nd /3rd best goalie in the world, buffon is too old, you have the keeper at real madrid then maybe cezar at inter and then reina, reina would have to be sold for a huge fee, i can not grasp your post? you should be more interested in
