Roy: “We’ve known about him at Liverpool for a long time”

|

Liverpool manager Roy Hodgson has praised the return of Liverpool left back Fabio Aurelio. He believes that it was a no-brainer to offer the Brazilian left back a new contract:

“We’ve known about him at Liverpool for a long time. The coaching staff know him even better than I do. I’ve only known him as an opponent but he’s a quality left-back who has been an important part of Liverpool’s past. I was quite surprised when I found out he was fully fit and hadn’t been offered a new contract, so I think it was a bit of an obvious thing to do. I said, ‘rather than move to another Barclays Premier League club why don’t you stay with us?’ Happily enough Christian Purslow was able to negotiate a new contract with him.”

After seemingly having no senior left backs for a time, the Reds now find themselves with two again after Emiliano Insua’s move to Fiorentina fell through.

Glad to keep hold of Fabio, can’t be rid of Insua fast enough though – desperately need to shift him out.

I think its good Fabio is back but id still sell Insua we need the money and we can bring someone better in, im not going to jump the gun about the new takeover rumour until its done and dusted so at the moment we need the money to bring in new players. YNWA

yes it is good news and good luck to Fabio but I think we have to go easy on Insua, he is 21 for christ sake. 21 years of age and people are judging him because he was thrown in at the deep end of the premiership at left back all season!!

good piece of logic and some part a gamble ……..but still this is a guy who can produce magic just look back old trafford last year and champions league against chelsea.

I’m very happy Aurelio AND Insua are staying. Aurelio is a quality LB, while Insua still a developing player. The next step is for us to get some more of the dead wood off the wage bill and buy a striker and winger.

Insua never should have played so many games last season but he was forced to due to injuries. To be a 5m player at 21 is good going. Judge him in 2 years. I would be happy for him to stay if he is considered as the ‘reserve’ LB and is given a chance to further develop. Aurelio is a solid LB, OK at coming forward, a good free kick taker, and i will always love him for that goal against Chelsea.
