Former Reds Star: “Ngog can go to the very top”

|

Former Reds striker John Aldridge has commented on Liverpool’sĀ French striker David Ngog. He wrote in his column for the Liverpool Echo:

“David Ngog can go to the very top if he keeps working on his game. David Ngog has been one of the most talked about Liverpool players this season and there is no disputing he has done well. After the two goals he scored against Steaua Bucharest, he added something different when coming off the bench at Old Trafford and Roy Hodgson will know he can play Ngog with Fernando Torres to give Liverpool options. I have got to admit that I am not Ngog’s biggest fan but, at the same time, it would be wrong of me not to acknowledge that he definitely has a talent and, with the right kind of work, there is reason to believe in three or four years he could be a top player.”

Aldridge believes that there are still parts of Ngog’s game that need improving:

“More than anything, he needs to improve his aggression and not be afraid to get right into the faces of defenders; another thing that needs looking at is the timing of his runs because he gets caught offside too often. He is composed when he gets into the 18-yard box and he knows how to finish; his goal against Arsenal on the opening day offered tremendous proof of that and his current tally makes for impressive reading. When I was playing, I used to work on my deficiencies over and over again and I would love the chance to spend an hour every week with Ngog to try and give him some pointers but I am sure Roy Hodgson and Sammy Lee have got that well covered. If Ngog can fine tune the parts of his game that need improving, he might just go right to the top.”

If one of our legends is volunteering his services for the betterment of the club, surely we’d be foolish to not at least take him up on a short term basis??

Ngog, Babel & even Kuyt could all definitely well do with some work on their off the ball movement around the box (with Ngog always running offside, Babel tending to remain static once he thinks he has found a good position and Kuyt only posing any threat in the final third when picking up rebounded efforts)

The lad is coming along just fine. Always knew that he would. If everyone improves at his rate then we have nothing to worry about re the future. Let them keep up the work rate is all I ask.

It is encouraging to see that Ngog has benefited from a lot of playing time last year and has gradually improved with experience. He certainly has all the attributes to succeed in the PL – he will bulk up with time and a fitness regime.

If we were linked with a 21-year old with his stats this season, everyone would be thrilled but when he is already on our books he gets a lot of unfair stick.

The way he tries to play the number 9 role is excellent and with development and experience I am sure he will bring it off even more often in the future.

This would be my 1st choice team and if Ngog was needed, because we were chasing the game, I’d take Agger out from defensive cover midfield role (which I think he be fantastic in due to his reading of the game and ball skills)I’d put Ngog up front just behind Torres.
