Thompson: “It surprised me that we went for him”

|

Former Reds defender Phil Thompson has stated that he “wasn’t too disappointed”  by the club’s failure to sign West Ham striker Carlton Cole. He said in the Liverpool Echo:

“One man who was heavily linked with Liverpool was West Ham’s Carlton Cole. In the end the clubs couldn’t agree a fee but I wasn’t too disappointed about that. Cole has only had one good year and it surprised me that we went for him because his scoring record isn’t that great.”

Thompson believes that the fact the Reds generally only play with one striker may have put off many potential signings:

“One problem with trying to attract a quality centre forward was probably the fact that the favoured system appears to be one up front with either Joe Cole or Steven Gerrard playing just behind. Maybe some players looked at it and thought if they came to Liverpool they would spend a lot of the season on the bench.”

    FAO Muz,

So good of you to call Turan the new Messi just to try and prove a point. In that case, I’m the new Anne Robinson and I say that you’re the weakest link goodbye.

Liverpool fans only rave because they’ve seen him on youtube with a few flashes of brilliance. In this case, Luis Garcia was the greatest player ever. One moment of genius every 10 matches and sweet fa the rest of the time.

As for Wolfy, Toivonen and Ruiz, I hope we’re linked with someone actually good, in a good league then you can all cream over him instead.
