Thompson: “It surprised me that we went for him”

|

Former Reds defender Phil Thompson has stated that he “wasn’t too disappointed”  by the club’s failure to sign West Ham striker Carlton Cole. He said in the Liverpool Echo:

“One man who was heavily linked with Liverpool was West Ham’s Carlton Cole. In the end the clubs couldn’t agree a fee but I wasn’t too disappointed about that. Cole has only had one good year and it surprised me that we went for him because his scoring record isn’t that great.”

Thompson believes that the fact the Reds generally only play with one striker may have put off many potential signings:

“One problem with trying to attract a quality centre forward was probably the fact that the favoured system appears to be one up front with either Joe Cole or Steven Gerrard playing just behind. Maybe some players looked at it and thought if they came to Liverpool they would spend a lot of the season on the bench.”

I am happy that we never got him too! Get Wolfy or Ruiz in the camp and leave these other teams crap players alone!

  • Mike Arms says:

We don’t need strikers we need width. Fast wingers who can whip some decent crosses in. WE have Kuyt, Babel, Jovanic, Ngog, Pacheco, Torres & Cole who can all play in the strikers role. WE do not have any width, unless he promotes David Amoo and drops Kuyt or plays Kelly/Darby at RB and puts Johnson on the wing instead.
I think we should start a new chant on the Kop – WE NEED WIDTH.

  • lee says:

Yeah that’s right smarts, we should have signed Ruiz or Wolfy because they are the best things since sliced bread since we were linked with them.

I very much any Liverpool fan worth his salt had ever heard of Wolfy before he scored against Celtic and doubt they’d heard of Ruiz before Hodgson joined and was linked with him.

Suggest you and the many other youtube watchers form your own opinion rather than jumping on the bandwagon.

The same appies to Turan who is now the best winger in the world since he allegedly mentioned that he wanted to join the reds.

You lot need to grow up

    Width, Width We Need Width…..

  • David Tyrer says:

Thank god there’s at least one pundit out there who doesn’t think all English players are the dogs b’s. Cole is poor; mediocre at best. And that’s from watching him on TV, not from youtube. Having never heard of Wolfswinkel and seen only glimpses of Ruiz, I can’t form an opinion on either. But if we’re going to be chasing players that are not exactly high profile (and seemingly don’t have great scoring records) surely we’d be better off just keeping hold of Ngog and relying on him when we need to. He may never grow up to be in Torre’s class but he’s our top scorer this season – regardless of the opposition – so he clearly knows where to put the ball.

  • Josh says:

It’s a waste to sign carlton cole,

  • Aayush Sood says:

agree wid david yrer….ngog is our topscorer nd all we cn do is put our trust in him now…

  • Kev Crawford says:

agree with Lee and David Tyrer on all counts

  • samuel charles says:

LEE YOU MUG, HAVE YOU STUDIED TURAN, ER NO, SHUT UP WILL YOU THIS GUY IS BETTER THAN ANYTHING WE HAVE OUT WIDE, HE IS BETTER THEN ANYTHING IN THE PREM TOO.

TO ADD WE DIDNT NEED C.COLE WHILE WHAT WE NEEDED IS LLORENTE MOULD, HEAD THE BALL, BIG STRONG, TALL TO HELP OUT AT SET PLAYS, CAN LINK ALL POSITIONS WELL, KNOWS TORRES GAME, KNOWS REINA, AND WITH A PLAYER WHO CAN PLAY WHEN TORRES IS AND ISNT THEIR IS A GREAT PLAYER TO HAVE IN THE TEAM, YOU SOUND LIKE A COMPLETE CU***

  • lee says:

    FAO Samuel
    A) We haven’t got any other wingers so you’re right there ref. Turan but he’s not better than anything else in the prem. If he was rated that highly he wouldn’t be playing in Turkey now would he….perhaps that’s why you think he looks good.

    B) We need 2 strikers, a proven goal scorer with pace and someone like Llorente.

Finally, don’t use caps as it makes you look retarded (perhaps you are I don’t know).

Sorry Lee I agree about Wolfy and Ruiz but everyone has heard of Arda Turan, Captain of Galatasaray at the age of 21. took Turkey to the Euro Semis scoring some wonderful goals at the age of 19. Closest thing to Messi. If you havn’t I would suggest you keep abreast of football matters.

i dont agree with any of you ,WHAT WE NEED TO DO IS sack em all and use the best of the resrve squad with the best of the first team players we have:can you imagine hansen on motd you’ll no win owt wi kids…….where did we here that before .we know our reserve squad is as strong as anyone elses and they are our future and to ignore this now would be foolish at best, its radical dudes but you know it makes sense, we have a fantastic set of kids busting to get in the squad and now with the club in upheavel it is the perfect time to blood em proper,we would do well and it would devalue the club for those two yankee ———- giving us the chance to laugh as they walk away with NO PROFIT .and by the way its not all doom and gloom remember monkeychester divided are in a lot more financial sh– than we are and while they giggle like the girls they are at us , we will be able to stick the finger up at them and just smile when the administrator busts them wide open as the glazers are going down quicker than a pint in a pi– pot,
we are in trouble but it is not as bad as it looks.LFC FOREVER .YNWA

  • Zahid says:

Our main problem is in wide area and attack. Since we have Torres and Kuyt Ngog and the rest, our main aim should have been to get wide men in. Don’t get me wrong we need a striker to take the burden off Torres, but having the wide men would mean Torres staying upfront in the centre of attack and not running to the wide positions doing our doggy work and crossing in for players like Lucas. This is the reason when we do have some crosses in the box no 1 is there because no one expects them, the more width we have the more people will get in the box and score, and create more problems for the oponents and the midfielders will score aswell aswell as our defenders from set pieces. It isnt going to be an easy fix since weve been without a decent winger since Mcmanaman left……YNWA

I think its better news than most of you about the lack of striker coming to LFC, C Cole is a waste of space, simple as, its time the rest of the team chips in with some goals and the younger lads need to move up, we cant afford to buy success so don’t bother trying, the back 4 look solid, Renia = legend,Raul is box to box attacking minded (plus not injury prone) Gerrard can now play further up the park, J Cole can jink past players and create openings and Torres is getting back to full fitness, the Yanks are sitting on a financial time bomb that means selling is the only real option + Roy creates time spirit at any club he has managed + gets the best out of under performing players and if he can work his magic on Babel it will finally pay off.

Its time to get behind the team, support the manager, encourage (not criticize) the younger players and sit back and wave goodbye to the G & H.

i feel a good season is upon us….YNWA

  • happy garden says:

I agree about bring in Wolf or Ruiz or Toivalen, but Turan is just not good enough for Liverpool.
If he can compared to Messi, then he would leave Turkey a long time ago. Why no club coming in for him tell the story that he is not good enough for top clubs.

But, Roy does not rate Babel at all. Babel even on a swap deal for Cole on transfer deadline day. He rate useless Ngog more than Babel, Pacheco, which made Roy not the man to Liverpool forward

  • kowwboyy says:

As we all know, Liverpool is in the process of rebuilding now so I suggest that all Kops fan be patience and give Hodgson some faith and time to turn things around.

This season LFC continue to have financial difficulties in obtaining high-profile or potential players. However, they did manage to get Joe Cole, whom I think is a good player.

What Hodgson needs to do is to give more chances to second-string players like Babel, Kelly and Ngog, while hoping for some favorable results. Without the finances, there’s nothing much Hodgson could do in the transfer market.

Nonetheless, I believe that should LFC manage to find a new owner soon, Hodgson will be busy during the January transfer window. Maybe then he could get his hands on high profile players once more.

As a summary, I believe Cole would not be able to add much firepower to the current Liverpool side. Nowadays big clubs like Chelsea, Arsenal and Man United are all focused on quick and fast players, as they all know the pace of the Premier League is getting faster and faster each season. Perhaps Hodgson should consider that element too eh?

  • paul bishop says:

abt selling players they wud b screwed if none of em decided 2 move which wud b a gr8 thng 2 do and then it wud force the yanks out thk god. what worries me is that roy didnt even attempt 2 buy any wingers even he must surely see that kuyt or johanovic is better up front and they r cert no wingers just hope he promotes maboo as he is quick and push cole on the left wiv gerrard, raul and poulsen in centre wud give us a much better chance than playing vry narrow football espec wiv lucas in the middle ok he tries hard but simply not gud enuff

  • width is thing were missing i believe babel will come good with hodgsons man management skills and the likes of pacheco and ngog will continue to improve like i said we just need width somebody with pace and dribbling skills to get defenders turned and get crosses in

  • davie says:

Weve needed a striker for over a season now its been well publicised. What we need is for the manager to be fully backed in the transfer market. All Roy can do is get free transfers but why did he sign another midfielder if a striker was high priority? How come we struggled for cash with C Coles transfer? Youz all know why dont you?
