“Liverpool is my home and I will come back”

|

Former Reds boss, Rafa Benitez has illustrated that he would have no problem taking the Anfield hotseat again in the future, should the opportunity arise. The new Inter Milan boss, who was sacked by Liverpool during the summer was speaking to Irish newspaper, the Sunday Independent, in his most candid interview yet since leaving Merseyside.

Benitez, who still owns a house on Merseyside, says that Liverpool is where his family call home and when his career in Italy is over, he will certainly return to the city:

“I am monitoring carefully everything that’s going on there. I have a lot of friends there and I received a ‘Justice’ scarf from the Hillsborough families group that is in my office at home. Again out of respect I think it is important that I talk a little bit about the past but especially about the future. For me, at this moment, that is Inter Milan. I keep my house there, we are based in Liverpool and in the future we will be there again.”

During the interview with highly-respected football journalist, Dion Fanning, Benitez defended his tenure at Anfield, saying that he won four trophies during his time and amassed points totals that would have won the title in other seasons.

Despite issuing a strong defence of his record at Liverpool, Benitez, often criticised for being too stubborn, admits that he did make mistakes while he was Liverpool manager. However, he does lay the blame for a lot of his failings at the two ownership crews who oversaw the club during the Spaniard’s reign. Speaking about the David Moores and Rick Parry partnership who held the reins for the first three years of the Benitez stewardship, he says:

“I had a very good relationship with David Moores and Rick Parry but the only thing I wanted to do was to do things quicker because we didn’t have too much money. To be fair, sometimes we were doing good business without big money and sometimes we lost players.”

Right now rafa, all those that got it wrong are sorry

  • Red Sky says:

Rafa, I would be glad if you came back…look at Woy! really do not know what to say.

  • Simon says:

Please come back NOW! I was one of those who got it wrong about you. My criticisms of you were that you seem to over-coach the players (always making signs on the touchline) and that left them little room for self expression (which must have been very frustrating for Alonso). Also I didn’t like the way you were constantly politicking in the media (as you had done at Valencia before). But I would gladly accept all of that now! Roy is no good.

  • Simon Borg says:

I knew that these where 2 great liars your situation is identical to to that at Valencia wher when you asked for something they gave you another I will never forget when you wanted Danny Alvez for around 3 million but the buggars did not back you God knows what he is worth today

  • jezer says:

    plz come back rafa!!!! plz

  • C0rnelius says:

Please come back Rafa! I’ve always backed you up even when fans around me were calling for your head. I truly believed there was noone good enough around to replace you when you left. We got Roy, a mediocre manager caught in a job too big for him. With new owners in, maybe you can do your job properly this time

  • fred says:

why do you want him back it is not the manager that goes out onto the pitch. It is still his team , you know the same one that scraped 7th place last season. 7 games and you are calling for his head.
    get a grip.

Rafa, I would gladly welcome you back with open arms, I never wanted you to go in the first place, you was a strong manager who stood up to pinky and perky (Hicks and Gillet) and made us the fans aware of just how much damage those two fools were doing to our club, no disrespect to Roy Hodgson but he is just a yes man, just a puppet to the Americans

  • Jon says:

Rafa . You were unfortunate to be screwed by the Yanks during your tenure. However I feel that after you sorted out the Houllier mess. You left us with just as big a mess. Lucas Kuyt Johnson. Not Liverpool quality.

  • iam says:

    rafa back would be amazing

  • Hugh Jass says:

Rafa would be a step backwards. He made too many mistakes to be considered again. Anyone that started Lucas week-in week-out must not be allowed to manage Liverpool.

  • ken08 says:

I too want Rafa back and i bet most of the players do too EVEN Gerrard, what a coup for LFC a Benitez who has learned his lessons and a players and crowd who appreciate what he was before!!MAGIC and C`MON RED BOYS and RED SOX, LFC YNWA

  • Matt Castellian says:

exactly fred – it’s the team who goes out on the pitch but Rafa apparently didn’t have his two senior players on the pitch for him or anywhere else. Hodgson has to deal with the ownership nonsense (so did Rafa – for years)Surely you can’t be happy with Hodgson or the team – aren’t you a bit worried, I know I am. One bad season and they were calling for Rafa’s head? Were you one of them.

  • geraint says:

Can confirm he has been offered a role in Liverpool, with the third best team Everton

  • reds says:

Rafa is good, but too stubbern. For example with the sonal marking which a blind could see not working, playing 4-2-3-1 even agains low teams. The players need someone like king kenny.

  • Voland says:

Rafa is the greatest manager Liverpool has had since King Kenny – and his record at LFC and elsewhere speaks for itself. He won the Spanish championship with Valencia TWICE after years of dominance by Real and Barcelona; the Champions League with Liverpool; came close to winning the EPL; and is now heading the Italian league with Inter.

    What’s not to like?

  • Voland says:

Apologies for mistake in previous post – Inter are currently in 2nd place

  • Lfc4life says:

Glad to see so many with their eyes open now regarding rafa…
I so wish we still had him and was one of many LfC fans who did not want him to leave.

    Unfortunatley I can’t see it happening….

It would be a step A giant step forward if it did….
but saying that Christian gross would be a big step forward compared to Roy :S

  • Derafanated says:

I don’t want Rafa back so we can drawn 0 – 0 at home.

Give Roy until Christmas to get the team playing the way he wants, the points will come. Its a difficult transition and he tried to warn us but some don’t listen.

  • maca says:

You’ve gotta be kidding are you all mad, what a short memory you all have. How can you justify playing lucas every week. Rafa had his chance and blew it with well too many obscure decisions. Get Martin O’Neill in he’s the man for the job.
