What on earth has happened to this World Cup star’s form?

|

Who knows, he could be rattled by the fact that his Argentinean team mates Insua and Mascherano left the club so swiftly in late August or he could just be failing to settle in the English climate. Whatever the reason is for his poor form, I’m hoping it’s not too late for him to overcome it and show why he was a regular in Argentina’s World Cup squad in South Africa. Last season I would have put him on par with our key players as he clearly added something fresh to the team, but now he is quickly looking more and more like a dead wood player. Watching Maxi this season he looks out of sync with the rest of the team and is clearly extremely low on confidence. Above all he seems unhappy and may possibly be dreaming of being elsewhere.

I don’t see him returning back to the form of his old Atletico Madrid days anytime soon but I do expect Maxi to prove himself as a decent back up to Dirk Kuyt or whatever new winger we buy for the right side of midfield in January. It’s unfortunate as he was one of my favourite players from last season but Maxi is now one of a few squad players walking the tightrope and playing for their Liverpool careers.

Blame the manager, his antiquated tactics and style of play.

Don’t blame individuals, blame all the players, they have all been poor. Maxi was our best player towards the end of last season

shut up,, maxi is a slo player, who adds nothing to the team, the only thing he did vs everton on sunday was have a shot at 20 yards, only was at the world cup because maradona is a stupid favoring manager, who knows nothing about football, maxi used 2 be good, but he is pants now and how dare you suggest maxi is the reason for our good home form last season? Have u ever been 2 anfield and seen a game mate? maxi is not the same guy that scored that wondergoal in the 2006 world cup.

yeah its because he’s being asked to play a defensive role alongside our back 10(including pepe)

  • Mek says:

Have to play him for him to perform. Mireless has been played on the right up until Sunday … so yes, DO blame the manager and his daft selections

  • Simon says:

The same reason why none of our players are performing. Why is Raul Mereiles superb for Portugal and no good for Liverpool? Two words: ROY HODGSON

He was hardly getting a match at Athletico, that’s why we got him.

To be honest, he hasn’t convinced me since he came here. He is not the player he used to be a few years ago. If he still was, he probably would have been played at Athletico and other teams would have tried to sign him too.

Another player who should be in the reserves to give him a boot up the arse along with quite a few others. I know the games changed but no player should be immune to be told their not performing well enough. We also need to encourage our fringe players to possible first team action at least they would show more effort during matches.

I couldn’t believe it when we signed this reject from Atletico, and then was in even greater disbelief when he just waltzed straight into the starting line-up in a manner that Babel, Benayoun & Riera could’ve only dreamed of!

That guy is as anonymous a winger as I have ever seen; the Lucas on wing play if you will…

  • Jay Wright says:

btw, that heading is misleading- Maxi was typically crap at the world cup…

Agree, I remember him being particularly poor in the game Argentina got knocked out. Everything he tried failed, including simple passes. He was crying at the end, his team mates were consoling him. They were being generous.
