Would you trust Roy with anymore money?

|

Liverpool Chairman Martin Broughton said yesterday that he believes prospective new owners New England Sports Ventures (NESV) will continue with Roy Hodgson as manager if they takeover the club. Broughton also revealed the consortium had promised money to spend in the January transfer window. Of course, if results continue as they are then Roy will not last until the New Year, but if results pick up and he is in charge on January 1st 2011, would you trust him to spend the money wisely?

On the face of it, the answer would be categorically ‘no.’ After all, although he has little money to spend, he is changed the squad quite drastically during his three months in charge. With players such as Javier Mascherano and Alberto Aquilani being offloaded, he has brought in Raul Meireles, Christian Poulsen, Paul Konchesky, Joe Cole and Brad Jones for approximately £20million. None of the signings have really impressed as yet with the £4.5m shelled out on defensive midfielder Poulsen being a particular waste of money.

Reds fans would be wary of giving any manager with such a track record after such a short time in charge, any massive transfer kitty. Certainly in the past, we have had managers who have spent vast amounts of money on players who were just not good enough to play for Liverpool Football Club; Graeme Souness and Gerard Houllier particularly come to mind. With the Reds struggling as they are, and with some of our own players questioning when this club will turn itself around, the January transfer window will be a crucial indication as to where this club is heading.

With hopefully NESV at the helm, a good deal of money will be made available to the manager to spend on improving the squad. For most Reds fans: a striker, two wingers and a left back are a priority, and these decisions on potential targets have to be got right for the sake of Liverpool’s season and future. At the moment, it is justifiable to question whether Roy is the man to make these crucial acquisitions. I do have a few words in the defence of our current manager though.

a journeyman manager who might be well respected but doesn’t have anything to show for all the respect he has? i didn’t trust him when he came in and i don’t trust him now. his methods have a slightly cheesy smell of someone who is just ever so slightly out of their depth, and as much as the ownership saga will impact on playing styles and confidence, his methods give the players an air of incredulity, like ‘wtf am i doing playing this position, in this team, like this?’

in short, no. get him out, get in a solid if unspectacular manager such as martin o’niell, and wait till the summer to get a world class manager in.

I agree, I would not trust Hodgson with money, so far he has been nearly as bad as Benitez. Need a right-back who can defend properly in addition to a striker, two wingers and a quick, tough, creative midfielder. Top of the list for me though is a replacement for big Sammi. a proper central defender who can actually win the ball in the air…..the whole team is as bad as it has been for twenty plus years and wont win many games this season.

Woy was only ever a stop gap manager.

Don’t spend vital transfer funds until the new long-term manager comes in probably in the summer – after Woy has his one and only average season.

and so say most of us!

It is not just the rubbish he has bought [don’t count Cole in that because he was already on his way before Roy joined]. More alarmingly other reported targets he chased, some confirmed by their current managers were even more alarming. Luke Young, Parker, Carlton Cole, Doyle! Couldn’t even make up his mind about a striker. Purslow made a public statement that Roy had funds but it was his decision not to sign a striker. Roy has never denied that. He must show better results with the same resources that Benitez had to prove himself a better manager. If more quality players are signed, who would take credit for any better results, Roy or more quality in the squad?

  • bertie says:

please give woy more money so he can buy the whole fullham team as they have got more idea than the bunch of no marks i have had to endure this season some who are pretending to be injured so they dont need to stand up and be counted lets sort it out its the players to blame without exeption the crap they have played this season

Six games are not enough to say the final word on Roy.
Calling for the head of a manager after only six games in charge it’s not Liverpool’s way.
I still trust in Roy, and He has until christmas to prove He’s good enough.
Surely Raul Meireles is a good prospect.
    I will back the manager.
Gerard had 4 yrs, Rafa had six yrs, so Roy won’t be sacked after six games.
It’s not correct, it’s not the Liverpool’s way to run the Club.

I wasn’t in favour of the appointment of Hodgson as manager and nothing he has done so far has convinced me to change my mind.

If the buyout does go through though and he is going to be kept on let’s give him the chance to to prove himself now the playing field is a little leveller.

One thing is for certain though, if he is going to be a success and a hit with the fans, he is definitely going to have to set his sights higher than the likes of Konchesky, Poulsen and Carlton Cole and prove he is not tactically inept which has appeared to be the case so far.

  • i love woy woy is king liverpool will win the fa cup the europa league and finish 12th

  • oh and by the way the winning lottery numbers this sat are 2 43 11 35 26 21

I’d give Hodgson enough money for a full tank of petrol and a map back to Fulham. He is woeful.

written in the mirror on the 14/8/10.

Steven Gerrard is smiling again after a summer of soul searching that took him to the brink of quitting Liverpool.
The Anfield captain led England from the front on Wednesday, the two goals he scored to beat Hungary at Wembley enabling him to ¬exorcise some of the ghosts of a calamitous World Cup.
He hopes his next step, when Liverpool face Arsenal at ¬Anfield today, will be to show he is fully reconciled with the club he loves.
Rafa Benitez has been¬ ¬replaced as Liverpool ¬manager by Roy Hodgson and Gerrard admitted: “Everyone is going into work with a smile on their face again”.
Roy is successful and the players are looking forward to working with him, so I’m very excited about the new season.
“At the start of every season I set myself ¬personal targets. Because I play for such a big club like Liverpool, it has to be silverware that I am after. If I get my hands on a trophy and England are sat at the top of our qualifying group then I’ll go on holiday a lot happier next summer.
“I want a big trophy. I suppose they are all big trophies these days, ¬because I am 30 now and I’m desperate to get my hands on as many medals as possible before I finish.”
Gerrard added: “I’m a local lad, a Liverpool fan, and I felt the disappointment of last season like the fans did.
“I have had some highs and some lows, but I am desperate to experience some more great nights as a Liverpool player because I know time is ¬running out for me. I don’t know whether last season was the lowest point of my career, but it wasn’t good enough.
“I am captain of Liverpool and to finish seventh in the Premier League and not lift a trophy wasn’t good enough for our club. We’ll be looking to put it right this season.”
Gerrard says he will use the burning disappointment he still harbours about ¬England’s failure in South Africa to drive him on this season.
He was below his ¬inspirational best last season as Liverpool ¬disappointed both at home and abroad.
But he was one of the few successes of Fabio Capello’s team at the World Cup after being handed the captaincy when Rio Ferdinand was ¬injured on the eve of the ¬tournament.
Gerrard said: “As a footballer, when you have a long career, you will experience highs and lows, and it’s important when you are faced with setbacks that you are able to move on as quickly as possible.
“When you win a trophy or big match, you enjoy it at the time, but there are always other important games around the corner. It’s the same when you have a disappointment. You’ve got to try to use those feelings that are still there as ammunition to drive you on.
“I spent a few weeks ¬reflecting on the World Cup and what my future would bring. There were regrets”.
“But I am someone who likes to move forward – that’s what I aim to do this year.”

I WONDER IF HE’S SMILING NOW.

  • Hodgson out now! Sick and tired of all the long ball nonesense, and where is all that solidity at the back which we was so “renowned” for at Fulham ? Never seen a Liverpool team with so little fluency in attack than this team… no plan at all.. just long balls all the way… it’s nearing as intriguing wathing Liverpool play these days, as watching the famous paint dry on my newly painted wall!!! Hodgson out now – clean break and a fresh start please !!!!

  • Decky says:

For god sake 7 games and a couple of months give the man a chance , ye’re a disgrace to liverpool, lets see how the team does with the ownership troubles lifted from the clubs shoulders thats been weighing everyone down before calling for sackings like a bunch of chavs

  • trev says:

its not really his fault hes had no real backing because of the sale process konchesky and poulsen were signed cos of a lack of funds meireles will be a great addition cole too we need two world class wingers a top quality striker and the defense sorted everyone can see this so im sure woy can with the takeover things will improve and stabilise the players need to take responsibility or get out of the club we dont need cryers we need winners ynwa

  • blobby billy says:

i bet decky and trev havent been to a liverpool match ever they sound just like all the rest of the telly watching pub heads beer swilling divies

  • Stevie b says:

Do not let the guy have any money. In fact it’s simple really, just get rid. CP and MB may have impressed in the recent battle with h&g, but appointing this man shows they have not got a clue about football.
He arrived with a reputation as a great man manager, so us reds thought great, he’ll get the best out of aqua, babel and insua. What happens: the fool let’s aqua and insua go on loan and spends £9m of his budget on players in similar positions who are average at best, much older so have less scope for developing, and worse than Insua and aqua. As the guy who sits behind me says “poulsen is a “poor mans Lucas”. Meireles is decent but again £12m on a 27yr old midfielder does not make sense. The budget should have been spent on a fast winger and another striker. I could go on and on. Just cut our losses, and get rid.
