Oakland Athletics General Manager Billy Beane has stated that the use of metrics in football is possible but change he feels can be greeted with suspicion by traditionalists. Liverpool co-owner John W Henry is a keen admire of Beane’s and appointed a close friend of his, Damien Comolli, to the position of Director of Football Strategy at Anfield. Beane said:
“Any change is going to be greeted with suspicion. It’s a natural reaction to anything. But I don’t think there’s a business anywhere in the world which is not using metrics, not as a template for success but as a tool. All sports are about numbers and it’s just a question of finding which ones correlate to a particular sport.”
Beane’s techniques were enshrined in the book “Moneyball,” written by Michael Lewis, and is currently being made into a film with Brad Pitt as Beane.
