Proof, if need be, that Roy must look at Pacheco again

|

Liverpool manager Roy Hodgson has warned Reds youngster Dani Pacheco that he needs to improve if he wants to get more first team opportunities:

“He’s had moments when he’s looked good, others when not quite so. He’s working on his game. He featured in the unfortunate Northampton game. It was a great opportunity for those outside the first 13 or 14 to really show me, ‘You should be thinking of me.’ When will he get his chance again? Probably in one of these games in Europe, who knows, may he will burst back onto the scene, but it is very difficult to do that in a reserve game.”

Taken on their own, the quotes are seemingly innocuous coming from a manager who is looking for the player to improve to get greater first team football. The biggest concern for Reds fans though is that such a lack of game time, could lead to Pacheco demanding a move away from Anfield. Only very recently, the Spanish Starlet said to Spanish newspaper Marca:

“What I need to do, in order to keep growing as a player, is play. We are going to see what offers arrive and then I will decide.”

Initially, the season started very promisingly for the 19 year old. After his return from the European Under 19 Championships, Pacheco said that Roy phoned him up and told him he would be involved in Liverpool’s first team plans. To this end, Roy offered him the number 12 shirt and Dani gladly accepted this offer.

Since then though, things have gone downhill for the youngster. After a good cameo performance against Trabzonspor in which he contributed to turning around a 1-0 deficit into a 2-1 victory in Turkey, he has played more often than not in the Reserves as players such as Jonjo Shelvey and Martin Kelly have moved ahead of him in being picked for Europa League matches.

His performance against Northampton according to Roy is one of the reasons why he has stopped picking Pacheco for first team squads, but surely he deserves more chances than that? Didn’t everyone play poorly that night? This goal against Everton for Liverpool Reserves in the Mini-Derby is proof, if need be, of Pacheco’s undoubted talent:

One comment on a previous article on this site mentioned that Pacheco had been late for training one day, and this could have irked Hodgson more but if Dani is unsettled, and wants to leave in January, Roy must convince him that his future lies at Anfield if he applies himself. No Liverpool fan wants to lose one of our best and brightest young talents. In an attacking midfield role behind the striker, his creative ability is there for all to see if you even watch him for just a short period of time. Perhaps a loan move to another Premier League or Championship club could help Pacheco and calm his desire for more first team action. If Roy allows him to leave permanently though, then I am afraid he will only become more unpopular among Reds fans than he already is.

Pacheco plays in a different area of the pitch than Jonjo Shelvey or Martin Kelly, and while they have had their chances and taken them (well, Kelly at least), Pacheco has not had as many due to his favoured position and has not taken the ones he has had (Northampton).

It’s all very well doing it in the reserves, but when you get a chance to step up to the plate, you need to take it.

Pacheco will get more chances but he needs to wait and then seize the chance when he gets it. He’s not ready for the first team yet imv.

Well Shelvey hasn’t set the world alight and there were plenty of other players who didn’t step up against Northampton but have been given a chance. You say it’s all very well doing it in reserves, but he hasn’t had that many chances in the first team. The only answer to this is putting him in the first team. I’m not saying every game, but at home against the likes of West Ham, he should get about 20 min. What has Ecclestone done more than Pacheco? I’m just saying that with foreign players, if they don’t get the encouragement, they get homesick. Why not loan him to a Prem team like what happened with Wellbeck and Wilshire.

      • Torres9 says:

I agree to some extent, but he does need encouragement and rewards for his effort. As stated by someone before, a whole host of players from the Northampton game have been given a chance in the team. He can’t just judge him after 1 performance, where actually he didn’t stink as much as the others. I’m all for Shelvey and Ecclestone to be given their chance, that is fantastic, but you have to see it from Dani’s point of view. He’s been playing in the reserves for years and has shone in the U19 European Champs this summer. He keeps hearing coaches and managers saying he will get a chance. Now he sees Ngog, Shelvey and Ecclestone given a chance. Ngog has done quite well, but Shelvey and Ecclestone have been passable. Isn’t time he got more of a sniff of the first team based on performances and his undoubted potential. The west ham game was perfect for him to be on the bench. I just don’t get how Hodgson is critical of him when others who played in the Northampton game get their chance.

Hodgson also says that he can’t really judge from reserve games. Well either put him in the first team or send him om loan. DO NOT send him on loan to Spain. That would be useless. If we want to use him in the Prem, then he must go on loan to a Prem side. Just like Wilshire and Welbeck. If you send him to Spain, you won’t know if he can play in England, plus he will prob decide to stay in Spain, like San Jose or Aqua in Italy.

Jaimie sometimes you are way too over reactionary and willing to defend Hodgson way too much. All us Liverpool fans are saying is that he is a star for Spain’s U19, many coaches around Europe see him as a talent, so why can’t he be on the bench instead of Babel or Jova. He could have the same impact as Macheda. It’s not rocket science. He is eager to give Shelvey a chance who actually hasn’t been that impressive, so why not give Dani and chance who has been plying his trade in the reserves for years.

We either use him or we lose him.

      rather let roy leave liverpool.

  • Frank says:

the only way any player can convince Roy of having value they must either be considered already world class i.e. Torres, or else he must be English. There is no hope for the likes of Pacheco or Insua, they are just not Roy’s cup of tea or more like passport!!!

  • Obinna says:

Roy is an old fool and must leave before he kills off our remaining.HATE his tatics can’t see pacheco, babel performing under him.we need smbdy dat can manage young players.

  • paul says:

    been there

    seen that

    enough is enough

send this no mark back to the spanish 3rd division

  • Stevie b says:

Total muppet….Pacheco is quality, but won’t get a chance because he is foreign!

  • richard says:

If Roy makes any move to sell Dani, then there is the proof that he is short sighted, and has no ambition for Liverpool’s future. The man clearly looks for poor, has-been players to fill the gaps as opposed to giving some younger players a go. Look at Arsenal and their use of Nasri, Chamak (or however you spell it) Ramsay (until injury) and Wilshire. Even Villa have pushed the likes of Bannan and the results they are getting are impressive. We need to show a little faith, esp. in the likes of Pacheco, Kelly, Ayala and even Mavinga. Lets get shot of Roy, and bring in someone with a little attacking ambition, an awareness of their entire squad, and a willingness to develop, encourage and promote talent. p.s. sorry for the rant.

  • Colie says:

I don’t know if anyone saw him against Blackpool reserves recently also…..first class…yes reserves…I know…but the link up play between himself and Suso was absolutely first class….I can see the two of them being the next Xavi/Iniesta…and if you have the steel that is Shelvey developing alongside them they will be a threat to anyone in the future….then add the pace and trickery of Sterling…..foaming at the mouth stuff…but as long as Hodgson get’s his finger out and makes sure these guys don’t leave due to a lack of opportunities. Then you have your english based players….Kelly/Wilson/Robinson/Coady/Wisdom…the best set of youngsters since the Fowler/Mcmanaman/Redknapp era.

  • kenny says:

Undoubtedly Pacheco is talented but only certain games in the Premier League would be suitable to play him in. He would be overpowered against teams like Blackburn,Stoke,Everton and Bolton.

  • Tilly says:

He needs at least 30 mins every other game as an impact sub. He’d tear tiring defenders to shreads.
Give him a chance to earn his stripes Roy, the lads got class and is an obvious talent.

  • Dede says:

Another reason as to why Roy is the wrong manager for liverpool. Any manager who gives Shelvy a game when Babel is still seated on the bench isn’t a good manager period. Roy should do himself a favor and leave coz he’s going to be absolute failure at Liverpool end of story.

  • Bujang says:

To be in Roy’s team you need to be around 30 years old and/or british

  • Vin Red says:

I think that people are missing a very important point as regards Dani and all our other starlets. NESV have stated that our future lies in developing young talent If Roy decides that he is right and everyone else is wrong about Dani,s ability then he will have to explain this to NESV . Anybody with an ounce of sense will understand that Roy cannot be allowed to undermine our future by allowing our best hope for the future to leave our future stars must remain with us and if Roy cannot see this then goodbye Roy and close the door on your way out..

  • Eric says:

Pacheco has undoubted quality and potential to be a top class attacking player but the reason he’s not getting a chance in the first team is down to the fact that he’s foreign. Young players like Kelly, Spearing, Shelvey and Eccleston have all been given run outs in the first team and that’s only because they’re English kids not because they’re any better than Pacheco. Of course, Kelly’s done a fantastic job and has taken his chance but what I’m trying to say is that Roy is quite obviously favouring British talent. We’ve already seen the likes of Plessis, Nemeth and Dalla Valle being sold since Roy’s arrival and what do they have in common? They’re not British, simple as that. Pacheco and Mavinga, who are two of our brightest prospects will no doubt become top class players but under Roy they surely won’t get a chance cause the manager’s a racist fag.

Yeah, like we’ve got no foreign players playing for Liverpool. Next daft argument please …….

    • Eric says:

I’m not saying that there aren’t any foreign players playing for the club but the point I’m trying to make is that when it comes to young talent, Roy is obviously favouring British players. Look at Kelly, Spearing, Shelvey and Eccleston, they’ve all had their chances but better youngsters like Mavinga and Pacheco have been left rotting in the reserves!
