Re-capturing his form could be key for Liverpool

|

To the delight of all Liverpool supporters, Saturday evening’s match against West Ham witnessed the return of Glen Johnson in more than one sense of the term. England’s number one right back, returning from a calf injury, made his first appearance in 8 games for the Reds at the weekend and, after the much publicised assessment made by manager Roy Hodgson regarding Johnson’s early season form, the right back answered his critics with a man of the match performance made all the more sweeter with the opening goal of a comfortable 3-0 win over the Hammers.

The re-emergence of Johnson will have excited Reds worldwide as we all know what the Englishman is capable of, on his day. Unfortunately, Glen’s day hasn’t arrived too often this season and will be the first to admit that there is much room for improvement. With some tough games fast approaching for Liverpool, including the final two Europa League group games and difficult Premier League games against Tottenham, Aston Villa and Newcastle; the club needs its best player to be performing well, especially in the absence of talisman and captain Steven Gerrard.

There is talk of a possible January exit for Glen Johnson, with ex-boss Rafa Benitez rumoured to be interested in taking him to Inter as well as current Liverpool player Alberto Aquilani (on loan at Juventus) talking up a move to the ‘Old Lady’ as a prospective switch for Johnson. However, I believe that the majority of Liverpool supporters would rather see Johnson stay at Anfield as we know the form he is capable of producing week in week out. To be frank, on his day, he is the best right-back in England, if not the world. And Liverpool could do without watching him perform at his peak at another club and rather support him to reproduce his best form in front of The Kop.

glen Johnson is not a fullback, he does not have a true defender’s instinct. However, he is capable of becoming one of the best rightwinger’s in the world. The argument that his attacking runs need to be started from the rightback position is ridiculous. For Liverpool ever to get back to a position where winning the Premier League is possible they need to get genuine width on both flanks ie wingers. Whether Liverpool fans like it or not this requirement is essential.

Best RB in the world…? He is a poor defender. But great in attack.
