Roy: We need others nailing their colours to the mast

|

Liverpool manager Roy Hodgson has stated he wants other players than Steven Gerrard and Fernando Torres to step up to the mark. Speaking to Liverpoolfc.tv, he said:

“Steven and Fernando are two wonderful quality players, but other players have got to start stepping up to the plate as well. We can’t just rely on Fernando and Steven in every game because if ever one or two of them has a slightly lesser game we need to show we will not throw the towel in. We’ve got to have a few people nailing their colours to the mast and making certain they step up and make sure we are a good team. Maxi is a good example of this with his goal against Bolton last week. He is someone who has come into the team and done extremely well. Sotirios Kyrgiakos is another. He didn’t play much last season but he is now playing very well for us.”

Roy knows that for the Anfield crowd to get behind the team, he must give them something to shout about:

“Our crowd will be vital to us on Sunday, no doubt about that, but we’ve got to give them something to cheer about. Crowds will only really get behind their team if they have got something to cheer about, and we want to reward them on Sunday. Our crowd know the players are working as hard and they can and putting the effort in.”
