A month that could define this defender’s future?

|

Agger will no doubt be required on numerous occasions during the next month, if, that is, he stays fit. The Dane has certainly had his fair share of injury problems since his arrival on Merseyside in 2006, even this season has seen him sidelined with concussion and his calf injury which took time to heal. The lack of game time has led to increasing speculation that Roy Hodgson will look to offload him in January. The most recent rumour, in the Daily Telegraph, linked the Dane with a move to Wolfsburg as part of a part exchange deal for striker Edin Dzeko.

Such rumours are unlikely to be true as the Reds will require every member of their squad to fulfil their fixtures in the coming months and Roy has already said that he doesn’t feel any players will leave in January. If that is the case then Agger has a great opportunity to establish himself in Hodgson’s future first team plans. With Jamie Carragher still sidelined with a dislocated shoulder, Agger has the chance to show he deserves to be a regular at centre-back at the expense of either Martin Skrtel or Soto Kyrgiakos.

Kyrgiakos and Skrtel failed to convince in Liverpool’s last Premier League outing nearly three weeks ago in the 3-1 defeat to Newcastle and failed to deal with an easy long ball for Newcastle’s second, which was put away by Joey Barton. Both Kyrgiakos and Skrtel’s abilities lie in the air while Agger is more mobile, has the ability to tackle and mark defenders tightly and can pass ably with the ball at feet. The Reds have conceded 16 goals away from home this season and if in the coming matches, Agger secures the backline more ably than Skrtel and Kyrgiakos then surely Hodgson will have little choice but to keep w the Dane in the team. The month ahead could certainly define Daniel Agger’s future at the club.

  • King Kenny says:

Agger cannot defend, however he is excellent attacking. He should be used as a playmaking option in central midfield. He has a great shot, great passer and can score goals. He began playing soccer as a striker.

Agger should be sold if they can get the right money he is not on the park often enough for my liking.
