Aldridge: “His time may be about to come”

|

Former Liverpool striker John Aldridge believes it is time that Fabio Aurelio got his chance in the first team. Writing in his column for the Liverpool Echo:

“With Fabio Aurelio seemingly back to full fitness and hungry for more first team action, Roy now has a big decision to make. It is no secret that Paul Konchesky has found it tough since he arrived in the summer; he has made a few mistakes, turned in a few poor performances and looks to be feeling the pressure. Aurelio has struggled big-time with injuries, but is an experienced player with real quality on the ball and excellent delivery from wide areas and set-pieces, and he must be knocking on the door now. With four fixtures in ten days, his time may be about to come.”

Aldridge also wrote about Liverpool’s other defensive issues this season:

“Defensively, Liverpool have not been good enough all season. That is a fact. We saw at Newcastle that the problems are continuing; Liverpool gave away some shocking goals and it undermined their performance. Whether or not it is a personnel issue is something for Roy to decide. It is fair to say we are not blessed with major options at the moment – especially at centre-back, where Daniel Agger and Jamie Carragher have been missing through injury – but maybe there is a need to freshen things up a tad. The likes of Danny Wilson and Martin Kelly have done well whenever they have been called upon and maybe it is time they were given a chance in the Premier League.”

It definitely is about time that Wilson or Kelly got some game time in meaningful games (i.e. the Premiership!) in their preferred position (i.e. centreback)

Their senior counterparts have not been covering themselves in glory and need to be made to compete for their places. I’d much rather we see what Kelly or Wilson can actually do at centreback instead of splurging +£10m on a player of a similar age from elsewhere, who may in fact be no better than the players that we’ve had wasting away on the bench all along!

Aurelio is a quality left back who is much better than Konchesky. The guy can defend much better and he is fantastic in supporting the attack with his crosses and free kicks. Konchesky has done very poorly since his arrival and with Aurelio now fit, I hope Roy makes him first choice left back ahead of Konchesky. I’d be real pissed if Roy decides to stick with Konchesky when we’ve got a fit and better player.
