What makes me proud to support Liverpool FC

|

On 31st October 1963 YNWA went straight in to the charts at number one, and three days later Liverpool entertained their bogey side of the time Leicester City. Not unexpectedly the Foxes left Anfield with the points having scored the only goal, but the Kop had started a tradition which still stands today and surely will go on as long as there is a Liverpool FC.

As well pride, we should count ourselves lucky to have adopted the ultimate song, one which can not be bettered. When you hear some of the anthems other clubs use to inspire them, some of them are laughable. ‘The wonder of you’, ‘Z Cars’, ‘Delilah’…?

Of course there are some renditions of the song which will stand out above the others. Who can forget the thunderous outpouring at the final whistle against Chelsea in the Champions League SF in 2005, when the utter relief of withstanding the longest 6 minutes of stoppage time ever along with the realisation that we were off to Istanbul contributed to the most passionate YNWA heard at Anfield for many a year.  There was the half time ‘we are LFC and we will never give up’ rendition in Istanbul which has entered Liverpool folklore. There was an absolutely brilliant singing of it at Celtic Park in 1989 when the club played it’s first game back after the Hillsborough disaster. This one followed shortly after the fans of Inter and AC Milan had sang it in tribute to the 96 fallen at the San Siro derby. The song also played it’s part in bringing comfort to the families of the victims of Hillsborough, and is surely the most played song at funerals in this city (including that of my dear old dad).

Of course every Liverpool fan will have his own favourite memories of You’ll Never Walk Alone. My first experience of seeing us win the FA Cup was sealed by the wonderful team goal finished by Kevin Keegan but constructed whilst Wembley echoed to the famous old refrain.

During my 40 years watching Liverpool Football Club I have seen more good times than bad times, and for that I consider myself fortunate. I love the club, and part of my love for LFC is embodied in the words that sit astride the Shankly Gates and are now incorporated into the club crest – You’ll Never Walk Alone.  Gerry Marsden, take a bow.

    Totally agree mate..

What makes you proud to support Liverpool Football Club?

The spirit of the Club, the values, and the pride carried on by Liverpool’s family badge 🙂
And the Fans too, sometimes, sometimes…..

Not accepting being taken for a ride by H&G and Hodgson. Stand up for the club, get Hodgson out.

the list is far too long, it was because the liverpool fans were so proud of the cities musical success that they sang the beatles songs etc and the rest is history. before this the kop roar would raise the hairs on your neck, why diddnt everton fans sing the songs ? you see we are a special lot. what the kop sing today the country and then the world steals it tomorrow, the tunes might be old but the kop put words and meaning to them, the ashes crowd in melbourne were singing we’ve won it 5 times (different words)other sing the saints (only like a dirge)i could go on for a week.

roys epitaph should be – he killed the kop.
i think we will have a good run unless we do his doom and gloom will overpower the whole club, only hope is a good run that takes his negative attitude with it. this team beat chelsea, outplayed arsenal and totenham but he has no ambition.

i can no longer stand this man he has brought a dark cloud over the club, we could even go down if this man who is afraid of the bottom team when we are at home. torres must be sold now every tuppence halpenny centre forward we play against makes him look totally lazy.
