A deafening silence eerily similar to a previous NESV decision

|

New England Sports Ventures finalised their deal for the Boston Red Sox on February 27th 2002. Within a day they had sacked General Manager Dan Duquette and had replaced him on an interim basis with Mike Port. NESV reacted very quickly after their takeover and there was growing speculation over the future of manager Joe Kerrigan. Kerrigan had only been appointed back in August 2001 after the sacking of Jimy Willliams but the new owners were careful not to endorse Kerrigan straight away after their takeover.

Kerrigan’s ally Dan Duquette, who had promoted him after William’s sacking, had already been removed from his position as General Manager and Kerrigan, uncertain about his position, asked for his status to be clarified with interim General Manager Port. No firm answer was forthcoming from Port and both him and new Red Sox president Larry Lucchino frequently declined to offer Kerrigan their support. With John W Henry and the rest of Fenway Sports Group on the other side of the world in the US such constant questioning about Roy Hodgson’s future is not possible, but the lack of a public statement supporting the manager is telling. Roy did say however he had talked to the owners before the Bolton match and he said:

“I spoke to the owners and they wished me good luck and sympathised with the frustration I must have been feeling after Wednesday night (the defeat to Wolves).”

Asked whether he felt he had their support Hodgson replied:

“I guess so. It is not about me. I am very pleased and honoured to have this job.”

What does he not know about Woy? Poor football, poor attendance from a poor manager

  • Kenny says:

Hodgson should never have got the job. If Benitez had been given 1 billion pounds to spend he would still have said he couldn’t compete. Liverpool haven’t had a real quality manager since Bob Paisley.

  • Voland says:

I can understand that NESV need time to identify the next manager, but I am afraid that time is simply what they haven’t got. Liverpool’s season is going down the drain while they deliberate – Dalglish or Benitez on a rolling contract is the only way forward at this point in time.
