I just don’t see where he would fit in

|

Ever since it was revealed that Liverpool had bid £4million for Blackpool’s Charlie Adam, I have been scratching my head as to the reasons why the Reds have attempted to buy the player. Firstly, it is certainly true that Adam has had an excellent first six months in the Premier League, scoring and assisting goals from midfield for the Seasiders who have a been a breath of fresh air with their attacking football this season, but again, it is only six months. It was only 18 months ago that Blackpool signed Adam permanently from Rangers for just £500,000. Since then he has led the Tangerines to promotion from the Championship and given Blackpool an excellent chance of staying up in the Premier League. Adam is already 25 though, and although he has been a crucial element in Blackpool’s success, is he really good enough for Liverpool?

Aston Villa and Sunderland are said to be the other interested parties, not Manchester United, Manchester City and Arsenal. Of course, just because these top clubs aren’t interested doesn’t mean he isn’t a quality player, but the lingering doubt in my mind is that he has played in the Premier League for just six months. Blackpool manager Ian Holloway certainly believes Adam is a “top four” player and even stated yesterday that Adam could replace Xabi Alonso:

“As I rate him, I think they’re mad not to buy him off us. I think he could replace Xabi Alonso, which they haven’t done yet with the greatest of respect. Raul Meireles is a great player and is starting to play like he can but they haven’t got that passer – Charlie’s their man. I know if I was Liverpool manager I’d have him in my team by now – I’d have bought him. And I’d have come up with the right amount of money because I believe in him that much.”

Hannah with that team selection you may have just proved Andy Gray right all along!

Don’t agree with the need for a specialist holding midfielder. Play Raul & Charlie in the middle, both playing box to box, with Stevie in behind Nando. They may have Masch now (doesn’t play every week anyway) but Barca played without a specialist holder for the last couple of years, didn’t seem to do them any harm

Hang on Rolando, while I totally disagree with Hannah there’s no need to be like that. The point about Hannah’s selection is there is no width, and unless Mourinho comes (you never know but I doubt it) can anyone see Coentrao chosing us? I don’t. Who would be the holding midfielder? Sure it’s great reeling of 11 great players but we need a team and I could only see Adam fitting in on the left which could be like Meireles on the right, a disaster.

Do you guys really think this guy Charlie Adam can replace Xabi Alonso? He’s 25 and it’s his first year in the top flight for goodness sake! He’s a good player but some fans are really overrating him, thinking he’s as good a passer as Alonso. Adam is probably more important to Blackpool than Gerrard is to Liverpool. Whether Blackpool stay up or not will largely depend on Adam and I’m sure Ian will not want to lose his captain and most influential player in the middle of the season. Even if he loses him, he’ll make sure he’ll get at least 10 million for the guy. If we can get him on the cheap, such as 4 to 5 mil then it might be a good signing but it’s becoming more of a joke if you’re telling me Liverpool are going to pay 10 million for this guy. Adam is good and will be important for teams like Sunderland, Blackburn and Fulham but not Liverpool. He is not Liverpool quality and the most I’m willing to pay for him is 6 million. If Ian wants more than 6 million for him then he can keep him.
