This will not be forgotten Fernando, no matter what happens

With so many positives on and off the field, where has this desire to move come from? According to Jason Burt in the Daily Telegraph, Torres was already unsettled last summer and had discussions with Chelsea about a move at last summer’s World Cup. He was persuaded to stay at Anfield after being given assurances by Christian Purslow that significant improvements in personnel would be made after the acquisition by new owners. The Managing Director at the time also promised he could leave if the club received a bid of £50million.

So from this explanation, the desire to leave maybe down to broken promises, but with the signing of Suarez, doesn’t this indicate Liverpool’s ambition? It has been suggested that the decision was made 5 days ago and that Chelsea were encouraged to bid once his desire to leave the Reds was made known to them. It looks as if he had already made his decision before the Suarez deal became known, but the question left in my mind, is why so late in transfer window? He must know that leaving it to so late would give Liverpool little or no opportunity to improve the squad before the end of the window, and to move to a Premier League rival would anger the fans even more so, especially as he has been quoted as saying in the past he would never leave for another English club.

Some will speculate that just like Tevez and Rooney, the transfer request is down to money, but the one crucial difference is that this transfer request came after a bid from another club. If he stays beyond January, he will have a difficult few months at the club until the summer, and beyond that, if Dalglish managed a Gerrard style turnaround, his reputation would still be hugely damaged. His actions maybe forgiven in time but never forgotten.

If he did leave though, his actions could have ramifications for others in the squad too. What will the likes of Pepe Reina and Steven Gerrard think about one of the best player’s leaving for a rival in the same league. Hopefully their loyalty to the club will be stronger than this want-away Spaniard. At the end of the day, if a player wants to leave, let him. We need players totally committed to the Liverpool cause in the coming years as we begin our struggle to regain our place at the top of English football. Rather than an overriding feeling of sadness then, I am taken by a sense of defiance. No player is more important than the Reds shirt, and we have shown in the past, when Kevin Keegan and Ian Rush left, that we can rebuild. The first saw the greatest ever player arrive at the club while the second saw Barnes, Aldridge, Beardsley and Houghton bought. Let’s hope if we get close to £50m now or in the summer, the club spends it as wisely as Kenny did in the late 80s.
