This will not be forgotten Fernando, no matter what happens

|

The news that came out last night that Fernando Torres had a transfer request rejected by Liverpool has left most Reds fans struggling to fathom the reasoning behind the Spanish striker’s desire to leave the club. With only a few days left before the end of the transfer window, the biggest question is why now? Why has it taken this long for Fernando to make up his mind, especially as it looks as though the Reds are on the up?

Already I have read people writing about their children tearing down posters of the player, and people feeling heartbroken by the decision, and it begs the question as to where all of this has come from. If we look at this logically the most obvious reason for Fernando wanting to leave is his desire to win trophies before the end of his career. No other club has the money or interest in buying the player at the current time so he feels Chelsea to be the right destination, but is there any real guarantee of trophies at the blues? The London club has an ageing squad and finds itself in 4th place, already 10 points off the top. The team needs a big rebuilding process in the summer and there is no guaranteed of a better campaign next season.

On the other hand, Liverpool are about to spend a club record fee on striker Luis Suarez and have also been looking to bid for Charlie Adam to make the total spend in January up to £30million. Perhaps Fernando thinks progress from FSG isn’t fast enough and isn’t willing to wait for the new owner’s long term plans to come to fruition. In any case, the indication of spending a club record fee in your first window should indicate to Fernando the ambitions of the club, and more spending is likely in the summer window when more players will be available for transfer.

In addition to this, new manager Kenny Dalglish has the club going in the right direction. Two consecutive wins and up to seventh in the table, Torres has begun to score goals again as the team’s style of play has begun to play to his strengths. A Europa League trophy is still in the offing this season and 6th place after the worst start to a campaign in 50 years would be no mean feat. There maybe no Champions League football next season but there is huge promise that next campaign could really be a successful one.
