As he turns 33, what lies ahead for this Liverpool Great?

In recent matches though, with the return of Daniel Agger to replace Soto in the side, there has been a great deal more solidity to Liverpool’s defence. It is definitely by no means back to what it once was but two clean sheets against Wolves and Fulham has seen the partnership between Martin Skrtel and Daniel Agger develop into a solid pairing. The pair also kept it tight in the first half against Everton but Agger had to be substituted at half time before the Blues scored 2 goals after the interval.

It is apparent that Skrtel is benefiting from having a player such as Agger beside him. No offence to the Slovakian or to Soto for that matter, but neither are really “thinking” centre halves, they do their jobs (heading away crosses and tackling) very well but they look the organisation that someone like Agger or Carragher brings.

This is where I feel Carragher still has a big role to play. He maybe ageing but his knowledge and experience at the back could prove invaluable to a fragile defence. No doubt King Kenny will be of the same opinion and I would expect Carra to be brought back into the side once he is fully fit. With Agger performing well, and having more pace than either Skrtel or Soto, I think he should be his first choice partner for the immediate future.

Beyond this season though, I think Carragher should play more of a bit part role. Helping young defenders such as Martin Kelly and Danny Wilson to establish themselves in the side. With Sotirios Kygiakos ageing too, next summer might be time to bring another younger centre back, who could perhaps provide competition for a place alongside Agger in the team. For Carra then, I see a gradual reduction in playing time until June 2013 when we can all say a great goodbye to a player who has played for the club with such distinction over the years.
