The Most Stressful 12 Months in LFC History?

|

So it’s over. The transfer window has finally closed and we can get back down to the important business of actually playing football. In many ways, it’s hard to understand that there are any Liverpool fans left, such are the stresses we’ve had to endure over the past 12 months. If any Red had forcibly removed themselves from the firing line of being a Liverpool fan and retired from football fandom, I think it would be difficult to blame them. Life is stressful enough – at even the best of times – without football (something that is supposed to be joyful and entertaining) adding more to that.

But I believe Liverpool fans should stay faithful, as things had to get worse before they could get better. Go back 12 months though, and you would never have believed just how bad they would have to get first.  The last few months of the 2009-10 season were not a pleasant time for us. Having to make up ground and not being able to put together any kind of consistent form. Finishing 7th after a poor season, especially after being made favourites, was a big blow. Until that point, the clubs off-pitch shenanigans had been kept from bubbling over by a strong few seasons on but with a poor season now finished, all eyes turned to the owners. More so for investment but they trumped any signing they could’ve made by sacking probably the clubs most popular manager since Kenny Dalglish.

From here, the low points just kept getting lower. From appointing Roy Hodgson as his replacement, to the signing of Paul Konchesky from his former club Fulham; things just went from pillar to post. And while the club’s stewardship may have changed hands in amongst all this, it saw the club being dragged through dirt in the process and the fan’s nerves being tested once again. But while we may have made it through all of that, by Christmas we had endured the worst start to a league season in what felt like 1000 years, never mind 50.

I'm a 32 year old Liverpool fan, living in the heart of the City Centre. I've supported the club since the day I was born and have been writing articles for L4L for over 3 years, writing close over 350 articles in that time. My favorite player of the past generation is Sami Hyypia.

I am the current editor for L4L, with my day job being in R&D for the NHS.

Agree with Vic – great article. The last few days have been more than stressful and by 11 pm Monday, I couldn’t have cared less who came and who went. Let’s just get on with it now and support our team.
