Benitez hints at his next managerial role?

|

Former Liverpool manager Rafa Benitez has suggested that he would like to manage Atletico Madrid:

“I’ve always had sympathy for Atletico, because, among other things, I have friends there, and because my father always liked Atletico over Real Madrid. I always have had much sympathy, although I’ve been in Madrid and have played many times against Atletico. I always liked the team, especially the fans, spectacular.”

Current Atletico manager Quique Sanchez Flores is under heavy pressure from his own board after five defeats in a row, and looks to be on borrowed time.

Wouldn’t mind seeing this happen, as a Liverpool fan.

I’ve a hearty respect Atletico and Rafa and think he’d sort them out given the time.

Not too sure I like the idea of him putting pressure on Flores though the media like this though, but then again I haven’t seen the quote in context.

I’d like Liverpool to consider offering Rafa the academy director / ambassador role since he’s done so well in bringing the likes of Sterling, Suso, Pacheco, etc.. and reformatted the academy structure. Let him see the job through. He may not accept as its not a front line manager /coach position but worth a try.

I was just thinking exactly the same thing after realising that in 6 years he did so much for the club on and off the pitch and was LFC through and through. If H&G had have financially backed him properly we wouldn’t be even thinking about not qualifying for the CL we’d be thinking who would you rather face in the semi’s ?,…

  • Rush says:

Don’t be silly. Rafa needs to rebuild his rep at a team like wigan. Rafa has not brought any talent through. Pacheco is not good enough, and sterling was bought from qpr.

  • Zyufa says:

your utter b******t Rush..how in the world you cant recognise his contributioned to our club since he was sat down as our manager for the past 6 yrs ago..even King Kenny realised how good his job was when he managed to create a very good and talented youth squad which never miss the quarter final of FA Youth Cup since he took incharge our team..he brought up suso, signed raheem sterling from qpr, smoothly nurtured kelly to be regular first team player, signed pep segura n rodolfo as a reserve n youth squad’s coach..is that you try to deny all of these things since he just made one mistake and then everything bad went to his head..its unfair mate..we never treated houllier the way some people treated rafa nowadays..we just realised we should have a fresh head with the fresh idea to bring back LFC to the where we should belong to..thats the only idea when we handed in virtual consent to him to let everyone happy and we can move on from that..not about other..we as a fan should respect him as our previous manager who brought the pride back to us either in europe or in EPL respectively even with the tide budget (always allowed to buy 2nd choice player instead of first choice like simao, higuain, david silva, eto’o etc by our two bloody yanks owners)..get ur head right my mate..we r liverpool, we will always live in the present and always recognised to whatever the previous people done well to our club..never look at the bad thing unless you are just another manure scum’s agent..full stop!!

  • Bekim says:

Narendra i agree with you. King should bring him back. It was Rafa who brought the King to Liverpool after all. Good luck Rafa wherever you go. For me you are a legend Rafa. YNWA

  • Alain says:

    Rafa are loser…

Won 2005 CL with Houlier Team then left us with bunch of garbage player.Spend so much money and won nothing.

    Rafa you are loser………….

  • eddykamal says:

rafa is not a loser, he is a conman with a f9m pricetag if get sacked

  • Rafa, don’t come close to us.LIVERPOOL……
    GO AWAY, 100000000000 miles away..
I don’t want to see your face or read about you..
    Looooooser

  • Gaz says:

Re Alain, if Rafa is such a loser and won CL with Houllier’s team, why couldn’t Houllier win the CL? And have you forgotten about the FA Cup that Rafa won the following year, with his players? And re Rush, Pacheco is quality, player of the under-19 world cup tournament. And as far as Sterling goes, yes, we bought him from QPR, what has that got to do with anything? We bought Shelvey from Charlton as well. But then again, we bought Ian Rush from Chester, bought John Barnes from Watford, bought Bruce Grobbelaar from Vancouver Whitecaps, bought Kevin Keegan from Scunthorpe. Want me to go on? It’s got nothing to do with the club you bought a player from, it’s got to do with how good that player is and whether he can make the step up. Rafa did a lot for Liverpool Football Club, mostly for the future of LFC. Imho, it was a mistake getting rid of him and I believe that the new owners would have backed him in the market because they share the same philosophy as Rafa, young, talented, versatile.

  • Ragish says:

Left a bunch of loosers eh, like Reina, Agger, Kuyt, Lucas (yep THAT Lucas), Skrtel, Johnson. And maybe we were lucky to win the FA CUP and to reach another final of the champions league and to get second place! Rafa brought us back to where we belong and you crisitize him for one season. Muppets!

    • Al says:

What Ragish said – spot on!
Unbelievable the way Rafa is talked about now by some of my fellow Liverpool fans – short memories! Sure, his last year wasn’t the best but we enjoyed some success and competing at the top of the table. Time was right for him to go, but let’s not slag off the guy who brought us our 5th CL trophy

  • Alain says:

Nobody remember second place team or even enter final then lost.Do you…
If he really good he should not be FIRED not once but TWICE….think back.
If he’s so good then why buy the joker like Dosena,Jelly lagged Aqualani that couldnt ply for 6 month then robbed us with Million of club money.
    Need any-more facts.

    • Andy says:

Obviously you hate Rafa, fine it’s a free world. But your FACTS are pathetic, yes Dossena was a failure but he’s an Italian international, so he’s hardly a pudding. Aqualini is a very good player who due to his injury record was always a risk but he has been playing very well for Juve this year and if you’re suggesting we got the better end of Aqua and Poulsen switching clubs you need help! Rafa’s failures are hardly newsworthy compared with William Prunier (my favourite ever manc), Tiabi, Djemba-Djemba, Kleberson, Bosnich and of course Veron! Yet does fergie ever get stick? NO. Why? Because the media hate us, that’s fine most of us know it, Kenny certainly knows it and the anti Rafa agenda is hilarious, he must have done something right to annoy fergie’s pals. Furthermore your pathetic slating of Rafa for winning the CL with GH’s team makes you look a simpleton, did GH sign Luis Garcia? Or Xabi Alonso? I seem to remember those 2 players did a lot in the run to, and the final itself. Even more so if you want to credit GH for the rest of the team go for it, my question is does anyone think GH would have led that team to CL glory? If you do, I suggest you are probably in a minority of less than 5%.So by your arguement Rafa is an extremely talented manager because he got more out of the squad than GH did. As for robbing the club, no that was Hicks and Gillett, Rafa had a contract and Liverpool wanted rid so he could have taken the club for the whole value of his contract, he didn’t he then left with generous donations to the HJC and several local charities, hardly robbing us. And as for not winning anything the only thing he didn’t win that we really care about is the EPL, but Souness, Evans, GH and of course the current WBA manager couldn’t do that. Maybe Alain you think we have a devine right to win the league, I don’t and I despise fans who do, obviously that in part explains why I despise Man United. But Alain if you are going to disrespect one of the most respected coaches in Europe, a man who worked night and day to compete with those who had far more money than us then I and others will expose you.

  • Elmo McElroy says:

Rafa Benitez is one of the top coaches in the world of football today. He was let down badly by the lying Hicks and Gillett, as we all were. Any of you who write that you think Rafa overspent, is lucky or is a loser are a bunch of “S*n” newspaper readers. To all of you who are, don’t you know that Liverpool FC will have nothing EVER to do with that rag. Rafa is also a top gentleman, but his one flaw is his man-management skills. If he can learn from his own admitted mistakes in his current sabbatical, analyse those flaws as well as he analyses the game of football, then he can come back even strogner than before.
