Carra: When he made that run, I thought it was Thierry Henry

|

Liverpool defender Jamie Carragher has praised the form of young right back Martin Kelly. In an interview with LFC Weekly, he said:

“He’s still young and his understanding of the game will develop with experience but he’s already a fantastic athlete. I was in the stand against Everton and when he made that run past Leighton Baines, I thought it was Thierry Henry against me all those years ago. It was turbo charged.”

Carragher gave Reds manager Kenny Dalglish credit for having faith in the player:

“Since Kenny’s come in, he’s really taken off. I remember in his full debut against Lyon (last season) he was outstanding. Then he got injured and when that happens, it’s difficult to get another chance. Since the United game, England’s first-choice right-back (Glen Johnson) has been getting picked at left-back so that shows you how well he’s done and how highly he’s regarded.”

TELL IT TO Mark Laurenson – he does’n’t know right from left !!!

  • Kenny says:

Leave Johnson at leftback for next season and promote Mavinga to rotate with him in the Premier League. Promote Jack Robinson to play in the cups. Liverpool need to stop wasting what little transfer money they have on leftbacks-their are far more crucial positions that need filling this summer.

    • Zahid says:

Johnsons longterm position is right wing or wing back, no doubt the club will buy a new left back its just temporary Johnson playing there and doing a decent job.

Martin Kelly looks the real deal i was singing his praises when i first saw him like Carragher said in the Lyon game last season at home he was outstanding until he got injured, but glad hes back and now showing what he has got, his longterm future bay lie at centre back, but Carragher started the same way and look what experience he gained and what player he turned out to be so kelly has a bright futre ahead of him especially is King Kenny remains at helm.

One final point i think Martin Kelly was robbed of an England place in the last game against Denmark as back up to Johnson at Englands Right back, Instead Spurs Kyle Walker whose at Aston Villa on loan got the place ahead of him, yes hes been doing well but Kellys had a better time of late, hes more versatile and can play anywhere at the back and has raw pace……rant over lol……YNWA

Kenny you keep going on about Mavinga, has he proved himself in any way shape or size? Not for me. Wilson is far more likely to play left back in my opinion. Do we really think he’s ready yet? As for your point about Liverpool having little transfer money, where have you been? I’d like to point out a few factors to you
    1. When NESV/FSG bought the club Mr Henry stated that intrest payments would drop from £30 million a year to £2 to 3 million a year. There’s £25 million quid.
    2. When the current owners came in they didn’t do what the previous muppets did and shout their mouths off. Now this could be they learnt a lesson and knew how skeptical we all were of yet more American owners. However it could be they know the business of sport and know that LFC in the state it was in, needed major investment, and if you open your mouth you’ll end up paying more.
    3. You forget when that traitor decided he would hold us to ransom, LFC was poised to make it’s 5th consectutive transfer window profit. But we didn’t because these owners stuck their hand in their pocket. Yes we spent about £2 million but you forget Suarez was already coming so in actuality the owners would have spent £17 million in the January window, when they have stated they would rather do their business in the summer window. So much for precious little funds. Furthermore WE DO NEED A LEFT BACK, Glen may well save us some money but Fabio’s injury record means you know he’ll be out for at least 40% of games. So you want to go into a season with a right back playing left back when young Kelly missed most of last season through injury. Is he injury prone? I hope not but I remember our right back curse, Rob Jones, Heggem (ok he was woeful defending but great going forward), Babbel and even Stevie Finnan’s first year was injury ravaged. We need at least one LB, at least one CB (probably two by summer 2012 considering Skrtel’s form and Carra’s age meaning that more and more he’ll be 3rd choice over the next few years), a defensive midfielder, no Lucas isn’t a defensive midfielder he’s a box to box midfielder and a regular Brazilian international in this role. Furthermore we need an out and out left winger, and a player of skill who can play wide or in the hole (maybe Cole could do this but his injury record suggests he wont be fit enough to get a run at it) and a striker. If we look at the realistic targets then Taiwo, maybe Kjaer (he’s a gamble, poor season has seen him dropped from Danish starting XI), M’Villa, Marveaux, Marin and who knows up front. That’s realistic, I’d love Coentrao but it’s unlikely espically as Taiwo is on a bosman. Pacheco might fill the wide/in the hole player but even so you’re looking at £60 million being spent and that is with 2 supposed “frees”.

  • Kenny says:

In reply to Andy you forget the small matter of the 300 million NESV paid for the club, do you assume that they will not have to pay that money back to whatever lending institutions they got the 300 million from? Everyone was raving about Pacheco’s performances in the European U-19 tournament last summer for Spain but yet conveniently ignore the fact that Mavinga played at leftback for the French team that won the tournament. We have fans deluding themselves about big money to be spent this summer when it is clear NESV quite rightly want to reduce the Benitez inspired 4th highest wage bill in the Premier League. Liverpool need to stop wasting serious transfer money on positions like leftback and defensive midfielder as these positions can be filled undeniablely by the likes of Mavinga and Andre Wisdom. Glen Johnson cannot defend at rightback as has been evident time and time again including against Sparta. Fans have got to stop pressuring the club to spend its transfer money on bitpart players like Coentrao, he plays for a Benfica team that couldn’t even get out of the first group in the Champions League.

  • Zahid says:

Coentrao is not a bit part player, just because Benfica didnt get out of the 1st phase of the CL doesn’t mean hes any less of a player, look at the way we started this season, and in cup competitions we have Gerrard and had Torres did it make them bad players or bit part players because we didn’t progress further in them competitions?? Coentrao will be a quality signing but you are right we should spend the bulk of the money on fulolbacks in the summer if we can get him less then £20 mill then all be it we should sign him, but there are other players outhere who are decent like Cissokho at Lyon who has said he would love to play for us or Utd last season, Taiwo Marseille, Royston Drenthe Madrid (on loan at Hercules) and Marcelo at Madrid and few more which i cant remember at the moment, these players would cost less and have exprience which Mavinga doesn’t have as yet but could play some part next season in cup competitions……YNWA
