“This is the best youth team Liverpool have ever had”

|

Former Liverpool striker John Aldridge believes the current crop of youngsters at the Kirkby Academy are the best that the Reds have ever produced. Writing in his column for the Liverpool Echo, he said:

“I say with some confidence that this is the best youth team Liverpool have ever had. There’s so much promise among the players that fans are excited to see them in the first team when the time is right. Usually, you can identify just one or two who might make the grade from the second strings. Now, there’s up to 14 who could easily appear for the senior side at some stage. Hopefully, in the next few years, the lads in their late teens will be getting some action and it sets up some exciting times for Liverpool. I think Kenny was exactly right not playing them against Sparta Prague, although it must have been tempting. Everyone is banging on the drum about Raheem Sterling, Conor Coady, and Suso, but they need to be moulded in the right way, and not panic them. The time will come, though, when one or two of them is ready for their first-team baptism, and that will be great to see.”

Aldridge is excited by the prospect of Raheem Sterling:

“It excites me to see what players like Raheem Sterling can do. His five goal spree against Southend last week was one of the best performances you’re likely to see from a youngster. Without getting too carried away, he looks to have an unbelievable amount of potential. He uses both right and left foot, has electric pace that defenders can’t live with. Of course, it’s about how you nurture kids like this as Raheem is only 16. You can’t just throw them in without a thought. He’s going to be a star for England or Jamaica whichever way he goes, but it’s got to be handled right.”

So Aldridge reckons out of a whole youth system that we are being told is full of several extraordinary talents that one or two might grace the first team – wow, what a return on millions of pounds invested! Liverpool’s youth system has been and still is a joke in comparison to the phenomenal job Ferguson has done with his system at Old Trafford. Man Utd will both outmuscle and outplay Liverpool in the youth cup on March 13th and the final score will be 4-0. Borrell and Segura would want to realise that the tippy tap total football that suits La Liga will not work in the Premier League unless all of these so called extraordinarily talented young players that we have been told about start getting taller and more muscular.

      Kenny

If you actually read the passage you will see that Aldridge states that upto 14 players in the youth set up could play for the senior squad

  • Frank says:

so, is Aldridge ready to congratulate Rafa for rescuing the academy, or is he going to keep his anti Rafa stance?

I have been a Liverpool fan for 34 years so unlike aj I actually care about Liverpool. Until our much vaunted youth players establish themselves in the first team in the Premier League the talk of Benitez’s legacy needs to be stopped. I detest Man Utd but anyone who knows anything about football has got to give credit to a youth setup that has produced the likes of Giggs,Scholes,Beckham,Butt,The Nevilles,O’Shea,Brown,Fletcher,Wellbeck,Gibson and many others. Beating rubbish like Southend 9-0 is meaningless.

Listen Ashok, I have been a Liverpool fan for 33 years. Where do you think Ferguson copied the winning mentality from that he imposed at Old Trafford and which has resulted in Man Utd winning soon to be 12 Premier League titles since 1992 while thanks to ostrich head in the sand fans like you Liverpool have won none. It makes sense that Liverpool should copy the methods that Ferguson has and is employing in order for Liverpool to start winning the Premier League again or is the limit of your ambition for Liverpool winning rubbish like the Europa League?
