Carragher: Houllier and Benitez were no failures

|

Liverpool centre-back Jamie Carragher believes the Reds have a long way to go to get back to the summit of English football:

“Liverpool get a lot of criticism. People say we live in the past – that we should be winning this and that. But the truth is Liverpool have not won the league for the past 20 years. Kenny did a fantastic job in his first spell but Liverpool was already steeped in success. In the two years before his appointment they had been to two European Cup finals. I hear people criticise Gerard Houllier and Rafael Benitez, saying they are failures because they didn’t win the league – yet I have to disagree with that. But if Kenny can get us back to where we were when he left in 1991, that in itself would be a brilliant achievement.”

Liverpool face Sparta Prague in the return leg of the Europa League tie at Anfield on Thursday.

    The only think we need is INVESTMENT;

    UNTILL we can go out and buy better players, nothing is going to change, kenny in charge or not in charge, just look at spurs, what has stedy investment done for them, lots.

    Liverpool need to bring in 2 left backs and let go aurelio and konchesky, its clear we need another center half, while soto, has been great when called uopn, he is getting older and slower, as is carragher.

    Poulsen is crap and needs upgrading, ngog is just not good enough, ir, so we need another frontman, wingers are key and are needed, two to be fair, but one would be a major start.

    We need the following;

    left back enrique, and coentrao
    wingers; young and turan
    center half; hummel or cahill
    center mid; banega or m’villa
    striker; aguero or lavezzi

    and sell the following;

    cole, insua, degen, aquilani, darby, brad jones,irwin, poulsen, konchesky, aurelio, plessies, el zhar, jovanovic, ngog.

    untill we invest we are not going anywhere, no more stops gaps, no more crap 4-6 million pounds quick deals, we need proven powerful young international players and thats that, end off

  • Kenny says:

    When will fans realise that NESV will only spend money on transfers in the summer that can be generated from player sales and the knockon reduction in the wage bill. The following players should be got rid of in the summer: Jones,Darby,Degen,Irwin,Ayala,Insua,Konchesky,Kuyt,Maxi,El Zhar,Aquilani,Poulsen,Jovanovic,Cole,Spearing and Ngog. This however would likely only generate 27 million but would reduce the wage bill. The club should sign Nzogbia,Ashley Young,Charlie Adam,Conor Wickham and Hugo Rodallega. The club should promote Flanagan,Mavinga,Coady,Wisdom,Ecclesston,Amoo and Ngoo to the Premier League squad for next season. Look at the player Jack Wiltshire has become by the age of 19 because his manager got him playing premier league football at 17. Dalglish would want to realise that if Jock Stein hadn’t believed in him as a young player he would have not had the career he had.

    Benitez was not failure at all. Two european cup finals in three years. We’ll see how long it will take us to get another one and win it. Gracias senor Rafa. YNWA.

  • mc_katsi says:

    NESV will invest money into LFC…it’ll be more than the money generated through player sales as mentioned by Kenny. NESV want to win PERIOD!!!
    A winning teams brings them a lot more revenue than the type of team we’ve been watching for the past 18 months.
