Is Kenny’s Tactical Surprise Here to Stay?

|

Liverpool Formation v Stoke:

—————-Reina
Skrtel   Krygiakos   Agger
Kelly   Lucas  Aurelio  Johnson
——–Meireles    Gerrard
—————-Kuyt

Kenny Dalglish certainly made a surprise tactical switch against Stoke City. Here was me disputing the merits of both 4-3-3 and 4-4-2 a couple of days ago, and the King decided on a totally different approach. The 3-5-2 employed in the 2-0 win last night does certainly offer some intriguing questions for the future though. Some Reds fans seem to be believe that the formation will be only used against certain opposition and that it was used against Stoke to accommodate Kyrgiakos so we could better combat the aerial threat of the Potters and John Carew. I certainly believe this was partly the case for the switch to three at the back, but there are other suggestions that the formation could be used more often. It could be a trial run for when Andy Carroll returns from a thigh injury.

The switch to 3-5-2 could very well be down to the players that Kenny has at his disposal. The squad lacks any real pace or width in the midfield areas and with both Steven Gerrard and Raul Meireles excelling in attacking midfield positions, the question has to be asked as to how Luis Suarez, Andy Carroll and the pair could all play in central areas. Some might say that a 4-3-3 formation could accommodate all four in offensive positions with Suarez, Carroll and Kuyt taking the forward positions while Gerrard or Meireles taking the attacking midfield and central midfield roles. In this formation though Suarez would be sidelined to wider areas and Kenny had this to say on a partnership developing between Carroll and Suarez:

“We are delighted with the two lads and look forward to seeing them play. The lads will be desperate to play together. It’s been fantastic for us to get them both on board.”
