Is there a Little Surprise in Store for LFC in the Summer?

|

After a very busy few weeks for Liverpool Football Club, you have to wonder: what does the summer have in store? Could anything that occurs after this season trump the drama we’ve recently endured? If one of my gut feelings comes true, then I believe it could.

It may not be to every Red fans taste but I have a feeling we may be greeting somebody in the summer that we know all too well, as our new manager. Somebody who, let’s be honest, we spent a good 3 years hating; someone, for whom, Liverpool was the preference when he first came to these shores. The man in question? ‘The Special One’ – Jose Mourinho.

Now, I’m aware that he is not popular amongst Liverpool fans; he spent a large portion of his tenure at Chelsea doing all in his power to wind Rafa Benitez up. He also had a very combustible relationship with our fans but I believe that this was, largely, down to the fact that we overlooked him in the summer of 2004. I am not a big fan of him myself, and his attitude and career so far have shown him to be a bit of a mercenary; it’s all about what Jose wants and what’s best for him. However, since leaving Chelsea he has often spoken of how much he appreciates Liverpool as a club and how we have some of the greatest fans in the world. So it is obvious that a lot of his prancing and gesticulating toward us was all a ruse, mostly likely to placate the Chelsea fans, who are usually more than happy if you give them a plastic flag and an expensive show-pony to tell them they’re a big club.

It would seem that everything is in place, for somebody like Mourinho to take over now. He is known to be getting itchy feet already at Madrid and has had several run-ins with the board. He also mentioned quite recently that he wants to return to England sooner rather than later and given that Chelsea seem to be backing Ancelotti, Arsene Wenger is as safe as houses and Ferguson will only be pried from his Old Trafford throne over his own dead body, there only appears two options for the Special One: Liverpool and Manchester City. Given his experiences under the Inter and Real boards, it’s highly likely that City would represent the option too similar to either of these for him, despite the millions available there. At the same time, Liverpool’s owners are a more patient bunch and have recently shown that money is no longer an issue. Plus, you have the fact that getting Liverpool back to the top would be an incredibly gratifying experience. For anyone. Not to mention a massive challenge.

I’m sure Kenny will be given due consideration and a lot of fans would no doubt like to see him stay long-term. Should he have a successful period in his temporary role then there’s no reason why he shouldn’t stay. But as a long-term option, NESV are known to prefer younger talent, both managerial and on the pitch so Kenny may well be for the short term. Either way, there won’t be very much top-class managerial talent available in the summer and you can probably count Rafa out, if he is even still available by then. If he is, it could well be a choice between him and Mourinho for the City and Liverpool jobs and this time, Jose Mourinho may get the position he wanted first time around and we would get one over on Chelsea’s fans in the process. And Lord knows they’ve got it coming.  I should end by making it clear that this is not something I want, only that the signs are slightly ominous to me at present.

give king kenny a 4 year deal jose has lost his touch

    • Zahid says:

I wouldn’t mind King Kenny given a longer contract, but your deluding yourself if you think Jose has lost his touch!!……YNWA

      • Matt Castellian says:

Delusion Zahid, have you been watching Real Madrid? they are awful, players arguing with each other, the crowd booing after every game. Madrid fans won’t put up with his type of football when their closest rivals Barcalona are brilliant.

        • Zahid says:

Joses style of football has never been eye catching, he still gets results, no one can play like Barce they are unique. But you don’t stop being a great mangager over night, like him or hate him Jose is a top manager.

  • Towson Tom says:

If Kenny does well and is replaced By Jose Mourinho then LFC will never make another penny out of me.

  • Colie says:

Sorry Jose turned his nose up at the job first time round, instead going where the money was…as he always does. Jose could of had the Liverpool job but stuck his two fingers up at it and took on the plastics instead.

  • Blindside says:

Although Kenny IS doing a great job if he was agreeable I would like to see Mourinho at Anfield. He would suit us down to the ground, winding up all the opposition ( Chelsea especially!). His arrogant-seeming demeanour fits LFC to a T!! He has a belief in us that he has always stated.

    • Meireles says:

      @blindside

His arrogant-seeming demeanour fits LFC to a T!!

What are you on about? We can’t stand Jose’ arrogance

  • MG01 says:

Successful, yes, but my God his teams play boring football. Under Mourinho Chelsea were efficient, mechanical, and suffocating. Many people make the assumption that just because Jose is charismatic, his teams are too. That couldn’t be further from the truth. His priority is always defence on the pitch and whilst his tactics are hugely successful, he lacks flair and creativity. Of course I’d love a bit of Mourinho success at Liverpool – but at what cost?

  • Red2death says:

FSG and Mourinho are a match made in hell. One believes in long term building and shrewd spending, the other needs unlimited funds to blow it all on galacticos, win as much as he can in the first 2 seasons, and then move on.

I think he’s a great manager, but if he’s forced to show any sort of financial discipline, he’ll be frustrated and whining like a kid in no time.

    • Meireles says:

Although he did work on a tight budget at Porto…

Can’t stand his brand of negative, boring football… its complete opposite to the way Barca play…I was surprised Real Madrid wanted him as their manager…

  • Zahid says:

Stupid article, Jose will never manage Liverpool FC, he wants the Man Utd job, and wouldn’t do anything to screw that up. He has said in the past hed manage any Prem club just not Liverpool, besides his wages would be alot, and would require an open cheque book for transfers.

Who wouldn’t want to see Jose at Anfield, but with all years he spent winding up Rafa, our fans, stuck up Fergies ass, like Roy was. Would we really want him if Kenny did a good job now until the end of the season?……YNWA

  • Quinnie says:

If Kenny keeps going so well then & only if he is fully committed he should be offered a contract. But if it is all as it seems (prob not knowin us) & he’s only here till the summer then who better to team up with Steve Clarke than the man he had huge success with at the bridge. We are now financially stable with a nice cheque book for the summer then if alls as bad as people are saying it is in Madrid for Jose then it could well be possible.

  • Decky says:

Never going to happen he’s hankerin for old ref nose’ job many a long day now. And we dont need hi
, if kenny keeps playing this expansive football and giving youth a chance and priority I the transfers we’re sorted fir the long term . It just might take longer then some fans these days are willing to wait.

  • John Doe says:

I would prefer having Pep Guardiola or even Rafa Benitez again as manager when and if Kenny does leave instead of Mourinho. He lacks class, although he’s won trophies.

  • Horia says:

    Thanks, but NO thanks!
