Loan Watch – What are Amoo, Eccleston and the rest doing?

|

Alberto Aquilani – I did an article yesterday about Juventus’s apparent attempts to reduce the fee they would like to pay Liverpool in the summer for the Italian midfielder. A brief recap to the affair is that Juve seem to be declaring that they have no money to meet the £13.5million buyout clause written into the season long loan agreement. The Mirror reported over the weekend that the “Old Lady” could only afford to pay a mere £5million, and that would have to come in instalments too. Considering Juventus’s apparent poor financial state after revamping the team last summer and looking like failing to qualify for the Champions League for a second season in a row, their declaration of poverty looks genuine. Former Juve Sporting Director Alessio Secco said yesterday that Juve may opt to make the loan signing of striker Fabio Quagliarella permanent, rather than Aquilani:

“I think it’ll be hard to see Juventus sign Aquilani. The player hasn’t given the quality necessary to help the Bianconeri make that jump in class. Aside from the game against Lecce on Sunday, in which the entire team played in a mediocre fashion, I think that Aquilani hasn’t had a great season and that signing him for €16m seems a very exaggerated figure.”

Aquilani’s form has dipped since the autumn when his performances were widely acclaimed. The form of Juve has also dipped significantly since then as despite a great 1-0 victory against Inter last week, they slumped to a 2-0 away defeat to Lecce on Sunday. Aquilani played in both matches but was powerless to prevent Juve slipping seven points behind fourth place Lazio. We may well see the player back in England next summer, despite his own apparent desire to stay in Italy.

David Amoo – I really don’t see the point of sending players out on loan if they are not going to play. The young winger has only appeared 3 times as a substitute during his loan spell at the MK Dons. After coming on a substitute in his first match against Leyton Orient in place of Lewis Guy to play as a striker, he was an unused substitute in the following match against Sheffield Wednesday. He reappeared against Brentford as a 75th minute sub in a 1-1 draw and he was a 90th minute sub against Leyton Orient last Tuesday night. At the weekend against Hartlepool, he wasn’t used at all and it begs the question as to why MK Dons loaned him if he they feel he isn’t good enough to play from the start. Amoo would have been better off staying at the Reds rather than be a squad player at the League One side. I feel it maybe best in future only to loan out players to teams that guarantee that the player will get first team action as otherwise, there really is no benefit to the player.

Aquilani is a rubbish player and Benitez should be lambasted for such a terrible signing. Why do Liverpool keep sending players out to lower division clubs where they make little or no impact, they would have been better getting the likes of Blackpool and West Brom to take the likes of Amoo on loan.

The only loanees that will make it at Liverpool are ironically, two of the ones you didn’t mention: Ayala and Mavinga. Two promising defenders who should be given a chance next season. Defenders like Darby, Degen, Konchesky and Insua should be shipped out in the summer. They are simply not good enough for Liverpool. As for Aquilani, even if Juventus cannot afford him, I’m pretty sure other Italian clubs are interested in him and are willing to pay 13m for the guy.

David Amoo and Nathan Eccleston, both 20 and still playing in League One, will not make it at Liverpool. El Zhar, already 24, does not have a future at the club. Kenny will most probably let these three all leave in the summer.

In response to Paul, it is because of socalled fans like you that Liverpool have not won the Premier League since 1990. If you woke up you would realise that the winning mentality that Ferguson created at Old Trafford was copied by him from the great Liverpool teams of the 1970’s and 1980’s so does it not make sense for Liverpool to copy what Ferguson has done at Old Trafford that has bought him soon to be 12 Premier League titles since 1992. Paul, do you prefer instead for Liverpool to be wasting their time on rubbish trophies like the Europa League.
