Five Things We Learned from the Man U Game

|

5.  It Doesn’t Mean We’re Going to Win the League – So last week, I mentioned that losing to West Ham didn’t mean it was the end of the world (and given the reaction of some Liverpool fans, you would’ve thought it was), similarly, beating Manchester United 3:1 doesn’t mean we’re going to mount a late surge for the title.  Fair enough, nobody has actually said that yet but I have heard – and read – a few over the top views on what the result means from Reds across the globe.  We certainly shouldn’t ignore the fact that it was a great result and an even better performance but it doesn’t signal the end of all our woes and the start of a great new era; this is just the beginning.  There is a lot of work still to do and a lot of areas that still need strengthening.  For now, let’s just enjoy this for what it is: a great win over our biggest rivals and a potentially fatal spanner in their title-challenging works.

4.  Jamie Should’ve Seen Red – Say what you will; defend him for all that you’re worth but Jamie’s foul warranted a red card.  So to did Rafael’s, no doubt about it but you can’t attack Rooney for his indiscretions one week and the next defend Carragher for a shocking challenge.  In many ways, it may have been better for Carragher, had he seen red during the game because, given the appalling pictures finding their way on to the internet of Nani’s shin, and the calls for Carragher to be retrospectively punished, he may well find himself worse off in the days to come.

3.  I’m Glad to Have Been Proven Right – It’s something I’ve been pointing out since the beginning of the season: United are a very, very average team.  I can probably list 3 players that would walk into Liverpool’s team from United’s entire squad at the moment: Evra, Vidic and… ok, make that two, and even then it’s only because we’re slightly lacking in the areas that those two play in.  In the past I’d have taken your arm off for players of Giggs and Scholes’s ability but they’re both approaching the end and we have similar players that are approaching their peak.  A pre-United Berbatov would always have been on my shopping list were I manager of any top club but one half-decent season in 3 doesn’t make him worthy of replacing any of our current strikers.  Much like Scholes and Giggs, United are fast approaching the end of their twilight years; let’s hope they all choke before number 19 can be achieved.

I agree with you all the way – Carra should’ve been sent off, it was a reckless challenge. But ‘appalling pictures’? Do you really think they’re that bad? It’s light-years away from David Busst territory, it’s nowhere near as bad as Cisse’s, or Ramsey’s, or even Ben Arfa’s earlier this season. Injury or not, it’s a nasty cut and a bit of blood!

    Man UTD fan here…

Well deserved victory for you and agree with all of your comments.

Yes we have been very average and lack creativity. Are you saying Nani, Valencia, Ferdinand, Hernandez, Rooney, Park wouldn’t get into the Liverpool squad? Nani has been our most dangerous player this season and Valencia was last season. I know Rooney is a shadow of what he used to be but to be fair our creativity is shocking…

Next season looks promising for you…

    Enjoy!

Thanks for being honest and graceful, MUFC. Sometimes I need a reminder that some of you Man U fans aren’t half bad! All I’ve heard the past two days is what scum scousers are. I’m not a scouser, in fact I live in NY, but I find it strange still the same. Isn’t Rooney scouse? Anyway, when I see a level headed assessment like yours, it forces me to stop stereotyping what an MUFC fan is. Good luck the rest of the season… I won’t be pulling for your boys, but I will respect them!

Yeah, as MUFC points out wouldn’t we want certain players. Deffo Hernandez, possibly Valencia but not the others he listed. Ferdinand is way past his best and wasn’t that great to begin with. He’s got a big gob that’s all.
Rafael looks decent but Kelly is far better.
When I look at our average and rubbish players then maybe I would swap them as they don’t have anyone as bad as Ngog and I know Lucas has improved but he’s still too slow but the rest of his game has come on. Maxi doesn’t excite me either although he’s quite intelligent with his positioning but again, lacks pace and strength and the reason he fouled Rafael on sunday was because he pulled out of a tackle.

    1. Kuyt will only perform anytime a lucrative new contract is nearly within his grasp. 2.Reina was a statue again for Hernandez goal. 3.Gerrard was lucky United’s midfield was even slower than him. 4.Having Gerrard back in the team totally disrupts Meireles goalscoring ability. 5.Maxi and Cole need to be 2 of the dross got rid of in the summer.

  • Jay Wright says:

You can’t seriously believe that you’d be better off with Maxi or Kuyt in your team than Nani, Valencia, or Rooney!? Smalling and Ferdinand as inferior players to Skrtel and Carragher? Let’s be serious plz

Btw, that list hardly contained anything actually learned from the Man U game…
