Would you welcome this £20m midfielder back to Anfield?

|

Liverpool midfielder Alberto Aquilani told La Gazzetta dello Sport today that he is uncertain whether he will be staying at Juventus or returning to Liverpool next season:

“The future? I’m at Juve, but I don’t know what will happen. I’m on loan and if I’m not redeemed in any case I’d go back to Liverpool in the best championship in the world. We’ll see.”

Going by his comments, he seems more willing to come back to the Reds than he has stated in the press in the past few months. Perhaps it’s because he knows that Juve and other Italian clubs are not willing to pay the asking price demanded by Liverpool, but it would certainly be an intriguing prospect to see the Italian back on Merseyside for the start of next season. Where would you stand if Aquilani returned to the Reds? Would you welcome him or would you want him sold anyway?

Many Reds fans saw the loaning out of Aquilani to Juventus last summer as just another example of former manager Roy Hodgson’s ineptitude. What benefit was the loan to the Reds? With no guaranteed of a permanent move for the player, Juve basically got a free trial without any essential purchase at the end of it. Either way, it seemed the Reds would get a bad deal, a player who would be sold after picking up form significantly after his injury problems, or he would return to the Reds after not performing to the required level.

It looks as though however that neither of these scenarios will become a reality. Instead Juventus want the player after he picked up his form, but they cannot afford the £13.5m written in to the loan agreement to make the move permanent. Juve General Manager Giuseppe Marotta is probably negotiating as we speak to get the price down, but I doubt he will succeed with the Reds now in a much healthier financial position than when the agreement was made.

I would love to see him back. He began to perform towards the close of the season, and I was shocked when he was loaned out. Even as a squad player he adds a lot of depth, and that is something we need to address. Surely the Liverpool squad is in a healthier shape with Alberto rather than without Alberto?

I would love Aquaman back at Liverpool. How many times have we lacked creativity when Stevie G is out? The Italian was starting to show us all why Rafa had faith in him. And lets remember the guy has been injury free all season – not bad for an injury prone player!

  • RedFred says:

The football is not in question, we just do not want someone sulking (Torres) because he does not want to be here 100%.
He would also need to make a big effort to learn English, which I think you will find he did not do when here before. If he doesn’t he will feel isolated and unhappy!!!

    • John says:

This is a point well made. It was well documented that he was not even attending his English lessons.

Deffinetly have him back,, he has payed well for Juve all season !! We are likely to be in many competitions next year and we will need strength and Depth ( Lucas, Gerrard, Meireles, Aqua )
    Sell cole,poulsen,jovanovic,ngog,degen,el-zhar,aurelio,insua,maxi anymore?? :-p

I hope we get aquilani back, he is a very good passer and playmaker, no need to spend riddiculously on Adam !!
We need Young, Contreao, Cahill or even bring Ayala back, he is good …

  • Bill says:

He wouldn’t have gone in the first place if it hadn’t been for that brain dead excuse for a manager Hodgson. His idea of a good player was Poulson and Koncheski, see how that worked out.

  • Mark Cox says:

Totally have him back, he was not given enough time to settle and like another said, idiot Hodgson doesn’t know a quality footballer when he see’s one.
Liverpool are sorely lacking a creative midfielder, Cole isn’t going to come any time soon, the creative spark is not so prevalent with Stevie G, we need another Alonso and Aquaman is it.
He will give Carroll and Suarez a lot more options and I think he and Suarez in particular would be an awesome duo.
Please, please Kenny, bring back Aquaman, there are not many top flight creative players left out there, so we do need to hold onto this one.

  • Mark Cox says:

Sorry David, you are so wrong on this, Lucas was just the same when he started at LFC, of course Aquaman needs to adjust, but he should not be doing the muscle work, look at Nasri, look at Anelka, look at Yossi, or our Joe Cole, they are not heavyweight midfielders, but then they don’t need to be, they are the one’s that will ghost in or make that defence splitting pass, if you knock them down because of their skill on the ball, you concede a free kick in a dangerous area.
This is the role of the Aquaman, let the others deal with tough tacklers, Aqua brings the finesse needed, Liverpool don’t need lots of players barging opponents off the ball, they need someone who can pass and has vision…who can spray the ball with pinpoint accuracy, whose nimbleness allows him the balance to dance past defenders, whose vision can spot the movement of the striker before the defender is aware.
Every team needs one (see Messi or Ronaldo) to make that final jump to being the best, see Dennis Bergkamp, see Eric Cantona, see Zola, see the point I am making?

I have watched aqua this year many of times his form for juventus is good saying his form has dipped is wrong juve struggle to score goals and only really have 3 really creative players 1 being aqua. Juve are struggling with the loss of quagliarella. Aqua has been 1 of there best players easy. I also watched Italy play Slovenia Friday night aquilani started and was brilliant again yeh he lacks a bit of bite but his creativity would be a welcomed edition. He needed game time now he has got it he had even broke into the national team. Bring him back can’t believe we let him go in the 1st place

  • Tony says:

When he first came to Liverpool, he was injured and was out for quite a while. After he recovered, he was expected to slot in and replace Alonso from the off. That was unrealistic of Rafa, and consequently he never really found his feet.

Now he’s had a season playing and is back to full fitness, I think he’s do much better this time around. I’d love to see him come back and get a few games. Of course, he won’t be playing week in, week out, but he’ll add something extra to our squad.

If he does come back and make a serious go of it, I’d take advantage of this and rather than bringing in another midfield player in the summer, focus on the wings and full back areas.

With Stevie getting older and injuries cropping up more often amongst our squad, I think another solid midfield player in the squad is much prefered over bringing in someone like Charlie Adam, who, while a great player, has had only one season at the top level.

  • steve says:

Either way i’d be happy with the outcome.either Juventus pay us 14million and take him which money could be spent on a winger, like AShley Young or Arda Turan for example,or he comes back and we have a better squad depth in midfield with the likes of Lucas Leiva,Steven Gerrard,Raul Meireles,Alberto Aquilani and Charlie Adam(i think we’ll get him).i mean that in both cases i’d be happy with the outcome.in the case i’d get angry is if we lowered our price like 8million for example where 8million are too little for Alberto.Damien Comolli and King Kenny(if he stays) will have to find a way in this one and i hope they find the correct one.YNWA

  • anakjin says:

if he come back… he must fight place with meireles… no automatic add..

  • Nacho says:

Get him back. he is young and talented.he has more years to go.kenny know how to play him.hodgson does not.enough with hodgson.lets move forward.

  • joe says:

didn’t he get the most assists in the league in the second hal of his irst season? bring him back either way – we want class, he is class

  • Pedro says:

If he’s willing to give it a 100% and not sulk like you now who, why not? He actually was our best player towards the end of last season when he had a run of games (6 assists and 2 goals…better stats than that waste of space Anderson over his entire Utd. career.)Lucas can protect the defence, Aqua can spray passes forward and wide and Meireles can make those forward runs that he loves to make. Centre midfield sorted out pretty much.

  • john says:

I would prefer to sell it is a good player but not the kind of player
we wanted to replace Xabi Alonso, with money from the sale
could sign a Boudebouz that is younger, with a bright future and
already said he wants to play in Liverpool.
