Aldo: I’ve never been a great fan of his but he deserves it

|

Former Liverpool striker John Aldridge believes Lucas Leiva deserves his new contract. Writing in his column for the Liverpool Echo, he said:

“I’ve never been a great fan of Lucas Leiva but he deserves his new contract. The Brazilian has improved over the past 12 months and is becoming a good squad player for Liverpool. The new deal makes sense as Liverpool need to protect their investment. Too often players’ contracts have been allowed to run down so much that their value has decreased and they have left at a cut price. If the club hadn’t acted Lucas would have soon been entering the final year of his contract and could have gone for next to nothing. It’s crucial Liverpool ensure that the players they want to keep who have a decent value are on long term deals.”

Aldo also believes the Reds may need to buy five top drawer players in the summer:

“We need a left-back and we also have a problem at centre-back which needs addressing at some point. Injuries have forced Dalglish to play Jamie Carragher at right-back and that’s left us vulnerable in the middle. Martin Skrtel has had a poor season and Agger has been in and out of the side due to all his injuries. Sotirios Kyrgiakos always does his best but sometimes his best just isn’t good enough. There’s talk of Liverpool going in for Bolton’s Gary Cahill this summer and I think someone of his stature would certainly fit the bill. The lack of width in the side sticks out like a sore thumb. We desperately need someone capable of beating a man and providing crosses for Andy Carroll and Luis Suarez. We’ve got a strikeforce to be proud of now but we need to improve what’s behind them. We could do with five players but there’s no point bringing in squad players. We’ve got enough of them. What we need is top drawer players in order to take the club forward.”

Hopefully the new contract really is just to protect our investment and ensure we receive maximum payment on Lucas, rather than a sign that he is going to be our midfield lynchpin for the next few seasons. There are just soooo many gaps in the first team at the moment! 🙁

  • Bekim says:

Never been fan of Lucas. Really. I gess you think that Spearing and J Shelvey are better than him. Aldo most of the time you talk rubbish. And the less you tAlk the better.

    • rassell says:

mate spearing is not a liverpool player he ain’t good enough, shevley migh become a good player in the future at the moment ain’t god enough…if players like them are getting a chance in the team then why is pacheco who is hundred times better then all of them put together, he has the creativity that we so badly lack.

  • SivaRed says:

Keeping Lucas suggests complete lack of ambition and bacause of that Dalgish and Comolli need to be sacked immediately!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

    • dixie222 says:

i think you need to go to the game and watch. lucas is playing well for liverpool, hence his appearance as centre mid for brazil. it is a good re-signing in my book, he is still young and the best years are ahead of him. all liverpool need is width!!

    • soebi says:

@sivared just try to shut your mouth up

  • Warren says:

Aldo, you were a top player but are clueless. Good squad player? He’s our best midfielder at the moment. Gerrard has not been fit all season, Raul is a luxury midfielder – you can’t play him alongside just one other in the centre. If we buy any midfielders, clearly Lucas will continue in the middle.

  • The Fox says:

Warren your the one whos clueless mate.. or best midfielder !!?? God help us !!! Hes useless mate, tries hard and all that malarky but bottom line is he’s useless. I wouldnt build a sand castle around him let alone the midfield of LFC. Ruaul is class, hes here a wet week and already done more for our club than Lucas has in 3 years!! Dont mind protecting our investment, misplaced and all as it was, but during the summer.. SELL SELL SELL.

    • rassell says:

you ain’t got a clue he does all the dogged work and his passes never go astray, gerrad should be sold now along with carra but carra rather then being sold should go into the coaching side of things…

      • The Fox says:

You obviously haven a notion about football mate, go back to sleep and we’ll wake ya up for Lucas’ testimonial !!! you ll be waiting.. sleep well Dopey.

  • blainey says:

this is what is wrong with us at the moment understandably Lucas may not be the best midfielder but we still need him at the moment to carry out his job and help us compete the rest of the season to get us into europe you should all be ashamed of yourself bashing a player when we as supporters should be ….. supporting our team not destroying our teams confidence !!! good job aldo you knob how do your comments AT ALL HELP THE LIVERPOOL CAUSE AT THE MOMENT !!!

    • The Fox says:

You can’t support someone you have no confidence in.. didn’t hear the same rally cry for Roy after only a few months, why ? cause people had no confidence in his ability to do the job. And its the same with Lucas mate. In my opinion, and I’m certainly not alone, hes nowhere next to near good enough to play for LFC, well he is if mid table obscurity is your target!! Lets get one thing straight, I go to matches, buy jerseys etc.. and therefore contibute in some small manner to these guys astronomical wages. Therefore Im entitled to say someone is useless if he is, theres no SHAME in that. I ve watched him for the last 3 years and i want a better quality midfielder in his place, simple as. So come down off your high horse, as if youve never at some stage called a liverpoll player useless !!

  • Andy says:

Ah yes let’s slag Lucas again, I remember a young Liverpool player I got slated for backing in the early 2000’s his name? Jamie Carragher, back then a lot of people gave Carra dog’s abuse yet I’ve never heard anyone admit I was wrong. Actually Warren is slightly wrong I saw signs of improvement when we had a Lucas/Raul midfield partnership after Stevie G got injured playing for england. To those of you buying the Aldo line of protecting your investment you’ll be sorely disappointed I’ll bet.

    • Jay Wright says:

tbh Carragher benefitted A LOT by playing alongside Hyppia. Henchoz suddenly looked like a very good defender next to the big finn and the same thing happened with Carragher. Funnily enough, as soon as Hyppia disappeared our defence has descended back to the joke that it looked like before Hyppia arived…

You are right that I’ll be disappointed in that Lucas probably won’t be sold on for a good fee and upgraded this summer, but I’ll also bet that all of us will be in for yet another disappinting season (i.e. no title challenge) if we continue to see Lucas being the building block in our midfield…

  • rama says:

Guys, Raul became a more or less player rather than a good holding midfielder after showing improvement in few matches. His passess are not accurate and he his weak in his tackles. Easy to bully compare to Lucas but Lucas himself is vulnarable and slow. Agree to had improved but to be a good midfielder with our team you got to be consistant. I dont see any Brazilian flair in him and useless in his header and missed many sitters. Time for us to look for guys like Alonso and Mash. Tying him up with extension in contract may not increase his value unless he can show that he is good overall

  • lee says:

if rafa goes to real then go get alonso back , also sanchez or hazard . this is the kind of team i’d like to see next year
    reina
    johnson cahill sankho Coentrão’s
    banega
    alonso gerrard
    suarez hazard/sanchez
    carroll

    subs
    goalkeeper,kelly,meireles, lucas,pacheco , striker
all 3 midfielders are great passes of the ball, when fullbacks push on alonso and banega can sit deep. lucas and spearing they are good but not world class ask west brom . if gerrard gets injured meireles steps in as playing him on the wing is a waste of his talent,he looked a world beater a few games ago in the middle but he is no winger.
