Lawro: Dalglish may have no option but to turn to youth

|

Former Liverpool defender Mark Lawrenson believes that Reds manager Kenny Dalglish may have no option but to play some youngsters up until the end of the season because of the injury situation at the club. Writing in his column for the Liverpool Daily Post, he said:

“Never mind running out of games to qualify for Europe. Liverpool are running out of players. Dalglish may have no option but to use the remaining fixtures as a chance to give one or two of the youngsters to see if they can cut it in the first team. The manager won’t just put them in for the sake of it, however. He’ll only give the opportunity to those he believes have a chance of becoming Liverpool players – the likes of Jack Robinson and Jonathan Flanagan spring to mind. And Dalglish will be careful where and when to use them, probably in home games. Who knows, it could end up saving Liverpool money in the long term.”

Lawro feels that it is not worth risking Steven Gerrard for the rest of the season:

“The defeat was bad enough for Liverpool, but the injuries made it a much, much more damaging weekend. Glen Johnson may not play again this season, Daniel Agger seems to be permanently injured, but it’s the setback for Steven Gerrard that will hurt the most. Liverpool will probably know more tomorrow about the state of the skipper, but there seems little sense in risking him now given it looks as though there will be little to play for between now and the end of the season.”

Injuries are part and parcel of the game but Kenny Dalglish has only himself and Roy Hodgson to blame for the situation we’re currently in because both of them decided to loan out several competent first team players. Who’s fault is it that we now have only 4 fit defenders? Kenny and Roy. Degen, Darby, Ayala, Mavinga, Insua and Konchesky. Keeping a couple of them would have provided the team with cover at the back but both managers were stupid enough to send them out on loan. Keeping Aquilani would also mean we would have more options in midfield and the guy can also play in Gerrard’s role but since the managers decided to loan out so many players then it’s their fault for the current injury crisis.

If he’ll only give the opportunity to players with a chance of becoming Liverpool players, what the heck is Spearing doing being picked out!?

Then again, seeing as the standards of a Liverpool player have dropped to just demanding nothing more than a lot of running around, a la Dirk Kuyt, any of the kids should be capable of stepping up

I dont understand why every single ex red goes on only about the young english players to be given chance. When it comes to the foreign ones who are better nobody mentions them. Is J Spearing and Shelvey better than Pacheco. I for one dont think so. Yet he’s sent out on loan while Spearing most of the time he runs like headless chicken. And all ex reds can go on about J spearing being good player the matter of the fact is that he will never be good enough to play for Liverpool.
