A Very Big Decision For Kenny Dalglish To Make

|

So Kenny signed a new contract on Thursday and I’m sure I speak for all Reds when I say I’m elated.  I will admit, I was dubious at first; I’ve said that before.  I also feared that, if he was successful and kept us up (let’s be honest, relegation was a very real possibility when he took over) he’d want the job full time and that wasn’t the right direction for the club.  However, he’s even won me over in the past 4 months and now I’m as happy as anybody.  I will always hold a candle for Rafa Benitez and I do genuinely hope he’s back some day but for the next 3 years I’ll be hoping we have a great deal of success to look forward to.

Moving into the summer though, I believe there may be one very big decision for Kenny to make.  It may never make the headlines or even the rumour columns; we may possibly never know about it but it could be the case that Steven Gerrard’s future is a topic for discussion, behind closed doors.  Now, let me make this very clear from the start: I’m not suggesting I want him to go or that I want him to stay, I’m just saying what a number of people have already aired opinions on over the past few weeks and I am not asking the question: what do you think we should do with Steven Gerrard; should he stay, or should we give him the opportunity to move on and, thus, strengthen our coffers for the summer?

There are two sides to every story, and this is no different.  On the one hand, you have to look at Gerrard’s ability and standing at the club: he is a legend, that is not in doubt.  He has been at the club since he was a lad and came through at a young age and broke straight into the first team.  His record for the club is astounding (particularly, given his injuries) with 140 goals in 556 games, he has been an absolute asset to the club for the past decade and for most, he would be the man to build a successful team around.  Much like Drogba, Messi, Ronaldo and only a small number of other world class players, Gerrard incites the kind of fear into players, even before a ball is kicked, that is near enough mythical.  In short, he is a talisman.

Hmmm… A difficult one. I can see both sides of the argument. It concerns me somewhat when I see players referring to him “as our best player” and I looking at him to win the game rather than taking more responsibility themselves. Dare I say it, we play better as a team without him. When he’s fit we always look to play through to him with fringe players taking little responsibility. I think the key to this will be Kenny’s man management and I am sure he will be able to get the best out of both Gerrard and the rest of the squad. On a slightly different note I have been thinking over the last few weeks that Agger could make a very good holding midfielder! He can tackle well, and has a good range of passing… Just my two cents worth.

Who are we to answer this question? This is Kenny’s call, not ours. So we must worry on this topic.

  • DanielLFC says:

What dribble is this? Why would you even think of selling Gerrard on, after all he’s done. Why would he even want to go? I can tell you’re a big Liverpool fan by the way you say “never really on the side of Gerrard” and with your views on Dalglish. You’re an idiot.

  • Stevie4life says:

Just stop whatever u’r upto. Dunno how u can even think of that. There r no arguments when it comes to Stevie G. Have u been smoking pot??

    • Shaunymo says:

Agreed Bro!!! Stevie is in his 30’s now, Just because we have a log jam in the middle that doesn’t mean that he can’t partner with Lucas in the centre of midfield! He’s always going to have that eye for a goal here and there, and there’s no reason why Sir Stevie won’t score 8-10 goals a season for the next 3-4 years! He’s a natural! and to even think of cashing in on our idol is ridiculous! You wanna make money, sell Aquilani, Poulsen, Konchesky, Cole, Jovanovski, Agger (injured 75% of his LFC career), Jones, Kyriagkos, Ngog, Ecccelston, Darby, Amoo and Insua! That’s about 40 million for you without selling Stevie! Plus, Kenny loves Stevie and knows that letting our Hero go would be devasting to the club! He is the face of the club and just because he’s bit injury prone and older, I can’t see it changing! Agree with ya bro…STEVIE 4 LIFE!!!

sell gerrard??? he’ll only leave if he wants to, and that wont happen.

  • Mez says:

gerrard was there in all the eras of liverpool, he joined the liverpool academy in 1987 when liverpool were world beaters under kenny dalglish and then he witnessed our downfall under the horrendous souness reign, then he got a chance in the first team under houllier in 98, won the treble in 2001, became liverpool captain in 2003, led the greatest comeback of all time in istanbul in 2005 under rafa and now finally, finally it’s his chance to play under king kenny, the man who at the helm when he was a little kid watching his heroes pile glory upon glory. no way in hell is he gonna walk out on this distinct opportunity to work under the greatest kop idol of all time. if we were going to sell gerrard we would of done it 2 or 3 years ago when would of got a good return on him.
he is 30 and hasnt had a good season at all. not alot of point cashing in on him now.
besides, his value to liverpool is higher than the value other teams would place on him.

  • Hey low says:

There’s no need to sell Gerrard. We just need to concentrate on getting the likes of Eden Hazard, Ibrahim Afellay/(Adam Johnson), Aly Cissokho/(Fabio Coentrao) and Gary Cahill. Then, Kenny can offload Aquilani, Insua, Konchesky, Degen, Jones, Joe Cole, Jovanovic, Kyrgiakos, Aurelio and Poulsen.

    Final team :

    Reina & Gulacsi
    Agger & Cahill & Carragher & Skrtel & Wilson
    Coentrao & Flanagan & G. Johnson & Kelly & Robinson
    Gerrard & Lucas & Mereiles & Shelvey & Spearing
    A. Johnson & Hazard & Maxi
    Carroll & Kuyt & N’gog & Suarez

Keeping N’gog NO WAY he is rubbish I would rather buy another striker than keep N’gog or even have Dan Pacheco as 4th choice striker.

  • K Johnie Njora says:

Gerald is a legend Why should somebody think of selling him just for money ? There are more value in retaining Gerald in a time than cashing him on. You You never think of this when he was young and high at his peak you never came up with this why now ? Gerald is there to stay and he has stated on several cases he is not ready to shift. When your parents grow old will you cash them off ? Johnie K Nairobi.

am sorry am not judging u…i love most of the posts in here..but this one it rily seems disguting to me!when the guy wated to leave to chelsea some time back..u’d say traitor!u can’t leave etc…but now that we have a decent squad u just wanna dump him?i find it disgusting..the way gerrard has played over the last two yars is far from being classy..but it was because maybe he knew he’d play in any match no matter what par injury…but now i think kenny gonna make him play if he can show that he’s better than lucas and spearo!but selling him now?that is betrayal!am a liverpool fan and i’d leave everyone ryt there but not gerrard not after all he has done for us!

  • James B says:

I think that we should sell caroll since the team played so well without him !! Why are you writers always looking for such none sense debates ?!
Let KK solve that – it s none of our business and even if it was, wouldn t it be better to work on how to get the best out of the team WITH gerrard playing rather than writting him off already ?? He still is a very top class player, and i m sure king kenny will manage the get out of him and the team we ll have in the end of august

  • Jeeten says:

what you probably dont understand (or do whatever) is that Gerrard IS Mr. Liverpool. At least for the current generation. To sell him off would be like selling a big part of Liverpool Football Club. So yes he hasnt been scoring alot of goals this season, which can be explained by the fact that he is now playing as more of a central midfielder, not an attacking midfielder like in the days of Rafa, and for his injuries, i guess you cant really blame him. His body isnt what it used to be. Lets just see, Kenny is a man of wonders and perhaps those wonders might as well work for our Mr Liverpool.

  • michael says:

hes kept faith with us when he could have ran to chelski like torres he should never be sold i think he has to be convinced to give up on england to concentrate on winning the title with us. we have to spend and added to what wev got should be far from a 2 man team. he hasnt been missed cos everyone is on the same page and wer playin a team game. if he can give us 30 games a season at full fitness at his age would be great. he shouldnt have to carry the team.
P.S. please never mention rafa the politcian again i hope kennys in charge for 15 years and by that time liverpool should have the next 3 managers on the staff already so were never saddled with a defensive minded coach again. PASS AND MOVE should never be abandoned again.

  • Lewis says:

As much as I enjoy reading these articles, this one is just ridiculous…

  • Red Indian says:

you are right in saying that gerrard isn’t as important to the way the team plays as he used to be and we can get by even when he’s not playing…
but there’s no way in hell we shud sell him, he stuck by us through tough times when he cud have left, i hope he fulfills his dream of winning the league with liverpool, he deserves it and its likely now that the king is at the helm..
and besides, we are financially in a place where we dont have to sell to raise money, least of all to sell our talisman for a meagre sum of 20 million..

  • eusebio says:

stupid article, not worth to read it.

  • vn says:

The easiest question i had to answer:KEEP GERRARD.

    –SUAREZ—————————–YOUNG/KURT-

    ——————–GERRARD————————

    ——MIRELESS———————–LUCAS——–

    ENRIQUE—–CAHILL———CARRA——-JOHNSON

  • anfield rd dreamer says:

You were against Kenny getting the job and dispite his ridiculously successful run with a team Roy nearly got relegated you are only prepared to give him his 3 years before bringing rafa back. You’ve never been a gerrard fan despite him carrying an average squad on his shoulders for over 10 years and now you want us to sell the guy who when fit is still the best most versatile midfielder in the league let alone the club, for 20 million. Are you working for Fergie?
