Rumour Mill: City outbid Reds for Spanish Playmaker?

|

The People reported yesterday that Manchester City have outbid Liverpool for Valencia midfielder Juan Mata. According to the paper, City have tabled a bid in the region of £22million and they have spoken to Valencia president Manuel Llorente over finalising the deal. It is believed that Roberto Mancini’s side are in advanced talks with the player after securing their place in the Champions League next season. The paper also states that Liverpool Director of Football Damien Comolli offered Valencia £17million for the player, and that Chelsea are also interested. It seems however that Mata could be heading for Eastlands.

This week it is former Miss World and LFC fan Rosanna Davison!

£22m is still a bargain price – Liverpool shouldn’t be put off by that sort of sum. If City push the transfer into the £30’s then back off, but for £22m we should still be trying to convince Mata (or any widemen of an equivalent calibre) that Anfield is the place to be!

  • Eric says:

£22m for Juan Mata is still reasonable but if City are going to push the price any higher then Liverpool should forget about signing him. He would no doubt be a fantastic addition to the squad but Liverpool should not be dragged into a transfer tussle with City. But if City do sign him, it’d be interesting to see where he’s going to play.

If the rumuor is correct that David Comolli only offered £17M, then I have to ask what he thought he was doing in a competitive market when a player of such class and age is being sought? That is an insult for someone of Mata’s class and everyone knows his value is far more than that. If that is a sample of how Comolli is trying to buy class players for Liverpool at a cut rate, no wonder we keep losing out on our targets.

  • Guy says:

    Old Timer,

Which targets have we missed out on under Comolli?? I’m pretty sure the price you offer the clud is dictated by the clubs willingness to sell and the players willingness to push for a move to the bidding club. Rafa VdV is worth about £18m but Spurs got him for £8m, so why bid more?. Same goes for Mascherano. Barca got him at less than market price because he pushed for the move. If Mata has his heart set on a certain club then that will influence the price.

Never compete with the fool! That will make us look like a fool! Liverpool should enter into trasfer tussle and once the exceeds 30million then back off.
We could get Adam Johnson for cheap!!!LOL

There is plenty of excellent young players around who can play out on the left why pay a fortune for Mata.

  • Aj says:

Agreed. £22m for a player like Mata is worth the money. I watch la liga every week ad ever since he came to Valenciz from Real he’s been class. The boy scores, assists and has got unbelievable tekkers. Signin him will ease the burden on the strikers and with gerrard back next season we will have plenty of goalscorers. YNWA
