Why Fabio Coentrao is NOT likely to be going to Liverpool

|

Over the last two days I have been reading some stories on other football websites that Liverpool have agreed a fee with Benfica for Fabio Coentrao. The stories cite Portuguese newspaper Correio da Manha as their source. I thought the story was a bit odd because only on Sunday the same paper had reported that Real Madrid had agreed a €25million fee, with add ons moving the price up to €30m.

My first thought was that perhaps both clubs had agreed a fee so I checked the paper’s website but there was no report to be seen that the Reds had agreed a fee. The only news story I could find relating to Coentrao and Liverpool came from the 5th March where the paper had stated that the Reds were interested in the full back and were readying a €22million bid.

In addition to this I saw the article relating to Coentrao’s move to Real Madrid, published on Sunday 22nd May. Using google translate from Portuguese to English, it becomes pretty clear from the article that Coentrao is likely to make the move to Madrid within the next month. It even holds a quote from Coentrao stating he will announce his move from Benfica on 22nd June.

From this quick research it can be ascertained that the chances of Liverpool buying the Portuguese international are pretty minimal. Still, other sites have rehashed the story that the Reds have agreed the fee. Even Sky Sports mentioned the same information in a story published today that Benfica president Luís Filipe Vieira is demanding €30million for Coentrao:

“Portuguese newspaper Correio da Manha has reported that Liverpool manager Kenny Dalglish has already agreed a deal for Coentrao.”

Whether they have found another story in Correio da Manha, I am uncertain, but from my perspective, it just seems as if they have replicated the same error as other sites. All sites, including this one, can be accused of regurgitating stories from other sources and rehashing news articles to gain greater page hits, but when misinformation is being replicated to such an extent, it is just very poor journalism. They should at least attempt to look at the source of the information before publication.

    Well said.

Yes paper talk is just chatter with the source of information often being very debatable. Who knows what will happen, its clear relying on the press is not a good source for truthful information. We may have some surprises to come during this transfer window and some may not have been talked about via the press, the truth is simple, when the player arrives and is having a medical, then we can get a little excited as the information is real, because it’s happening! not just chatter.

Lets trust kenny and those around him to do whats right for our club…

And yes, I’m excited about our future, just want these medicals to hurry-up 🙂

Agree with Dave, completly correct. Couldn’t believe that sky sports had made a mistake like this, I would definetly expect them to check the source.

    Yes it is very strange.
Although if you think about Real Madrid and there are not all established at this time. Since Jose I do not think he feels comfortable at the moment and I do not think he will bring new players out there until he determines his future.

like king kenny says it is silly season enrique maybe c adams s parker s downing then type of signings i think we will get y.n.w.a.

  • Alan says:

Charlie Adam, Stuart Downing, Jose Enqrique are not going to make us into title challengers.

We need to keep buying players like Luis Suarez. Players who are or will possibly become world class, not players like Adam and Downing who will never be world class. We have enough of those type already to make up the squad.

    • Blindside says:

They certainly are not and I agree Alan. Still there are fans out there who are convinced that they will! No wonder we can’t get another title!!!

  • Brian says:

I agree that the deal is unlikely and the source has zero credability but find it hard to believe the article doesn’t exist after the exposure its after getting.

  • TG says:

Coentrao is not going to Madrid as Marcelo and Di Maria are there and playing well, there is no shirt for him there. Liverpool have a great chance of signing him, as he knows he will play week in week out at Anfield. The lad was interested in the past and that was before the takeover and KK came back!!!!

Guillem Balague has just said on Talksport that he phoned the Benfica chairman and was told no offers have been made yet, the Real Madrid link is Benfica trying to get an auction going. Madrid have no interest in the player however B Munich are interested like Liverpool,so there we have it, from Guillem Balague tonight!!!!

Typical lazy hacks, (cut ‘N’ Paste) is all they know. and lets face it Sky is the same company as the Sun, says it all in my humble opinion.

  • Good chance if RM are not interested, Meireles will sing our praises and across Europe will still have a massive name. Suarez joined with little posibility of european footbal next season.
The names mentioned as not good enough, are very good in the premiership, the only competition we should concentrate on, so those players would be good, already used to the pace and pressure.

Over priced over rated and over to Real.
