A Big Mistake or would he merit the £19M Fee?

Reports on Thursday suggest that Liverpool are on the verge of signing Stewart Downing from Aston Villa for £19million. The OurKop.com team have been debating this potential transfer all day and would like to hear what you think. Is £19million too much for Downing?

Kava said: “We just have to accept that English players come at a premium and Downing being an England international is no different. I will be upset though to find out that Ashley Young goes to ManUre for a cheaper price as I believe he is a better player than Downing.

I think that Downing is good signing as he is a natural on the flank and has Premier League experience. However I dont think he is the marquee signing that we desperately need to send a message to the rest of the league that we are serious.“

Manny rolled back the clock to when two Spurs stars left for greener pastures and said: “I hope this isn’t a repeat of the Spurs scenario: ManUre got Berba and 20+ goals a season and we got Keano who scored that one amazing goal against Arsenal (He did get a total 5 goals though for us)!!!“

Sam did not mince his words: “£19m for Downing would be an EPIC SWINDLE“

MoKo summed it up by saying: “I think you must also consider the contractual situations. Downing re-signed last season. Young’s contract is near the end. That will affect their prices significantly.

It would have been nice to get Young but we are just not competitive enough to get the top notch guys. Hopefully the Downing type guys will get us there so we can buy better players.“

What do you think? Should Liverpool spend £19million on Downing?

1st this isn’t going to happen. 2nd if it did it would be for a lot more than 19m. Finally
Downing would be the best player at your club if you pulled this off.

But like i said it isn’t going to happen.

I feel sorry for you. All you best players a snapped up by teams with money and ambition. You get half way up the table….dream of Europe, then someone with a fat wallet buys your players to warm a bench in Manchester.

i think you will find man u paid less for young was because young only had one year left on his contract. downing is a far better player on his day. 25m + please

  • Jens Martin says:

As Jinks said, you really don’t need to worry about this because it isn’t going to happen, at least not for 19M. I’m not sure where this figire of 19M came from but I can guarentee you 100% that if Stewart Downing does join Liverpool this summer, it won’t be for a penny less than 30M.

Is he worth that much? Is any footballer? If Jordan Henderson is worth 20M though and if Ashley Young in the last year of his contract is worth 17M, then yes, Downing is worth 30M.

funny how many villa fans are on “Live4liverpool.com” trying to big up downing and his fee….

  • Jens Martin says:

I don’t think it’s a case of trying to “big up” his fee. There seems to be a view out there at the moment that Liverpool can have Downing if they bid 19M for for him. Now whether that is a justified price or not is irrelevant, we’re just pointing out that this ia a factual error. One which was pointed out by Alex McLeish and Paul Faulkner in their meeting with fans representatives. In fact I believe the figure quoted in that meeting was 50M.

  • Villa hardcore says:

Overrated and annonymous in half the games he plays give us the 19m please Ashley young is far better will shine at utd may as well give them the title now

  • Jinks says:

Jens Martin – well said…We are not on here to have a go we are just pointing out a few facts.

Downing is 26 & has just had a fantastic season, he was by miles our player of the season so why would a player that we paid 12m with a broken foot who’s just regained his England place because of how good he is playing be worth only 19m? yet Henderson a player that couldn’t lace his boots is worth £20m & Young who didn’t even come close in th same team be worth 17m due to the fact his contract was nearly up!!

Think about it and you’ll get where we are coming from at 19m it will never happen.

  • Jinks says:

Villa hardcore…Do you actually watch Aston Villa?

I was sceptical when we bought Downing for £12m but he does what it says ont he tin; he won’t work hard, he might injure himself trying to dangle his leg at someone, but give him the ball in the last third and he will do something good with it 7/10 would say he is not as good as we need to be where we want to be as an all round player, but if you can afford his lack of work rate-as maybe you lot can-will put the ball in the right areas and will pop in with a few goals.

personally wouldnt mention him in the same breath as Maxi let alone Young in terms of raw footballing ability and excitement- he is like a left footed david beckham-without the work rate.

I hope this never happen 12 Mill max. But it mildly most British players are overrated. Proven EPL means nothing, what about looking to the future and looking at the CL, who did we win with there were not a load of Brit players in that side was there. If we take on this policy of turning our side into practically and England team we are not going to get far, not saying we couldn’t win the FA cup or something but that’s it.

  • nigel says:

decent player. Good on his day. May play better and more consistent in a better team, like i believe young will do at man united. Would rather look at other players if thats the price. Vargas and elia for our left back and winger- would prob cost around £25m for both but solves two probs. Makes more sense. Although, downing has got a good cross and carroll will need accurate crossing to get his head on!

  • Lewis says:

Downing >>>>>>>>>>>> Young so yes he is worth £19m.

  • gerard says:

If LFC has the money to splash then Downing, Charlie Adam, and specially Juan Mata must complete the midfield. As for the strikers we need one more, and then give Raheem a chance in the first team. At the back may be we must have Gary and clichy because both are familliar with the premiership. That makes a lot of money. But if LFC do not spend they won’t even be in the top four. Therefore Mr Henry… the ball in now in your …hands!

  • Cok Matt says:

Age 26year and price is 20milion?Better get Juan Mata or Eden Hazard. If next season we get both of them, i’m sure many fullback cannot sleep well.

  • Hafizz Kedah says:

LFC WILL FEEL SORY AND REGRET IF THEY SIGN FOR STEWARD DOWNING AND CHARLES N’ZOGBIA.EXPENSIVE TO GET THEIR SERVIS.BETTER FORGET IT PLAN TO SIGN THEM.WASTE MONEY AND TIMES…..

  • sani says:

    get mata not downing
