The Umpteenth Winger Linked but is he worth a £11m gamble?

|

With Liverpool seeking a winger or two this summer, it has been inevitable that the Reds have been linked with nearly every player imaginable. The latest is Marseille’s Andre Ayew. So who is he?

Although born in France, Ayew has opted to play for his parents’ country Ghana, and he comes from a family of notable footballers. He is the nephew of Kwame and Sola Ayew who were both international footballers, and he has two brothers, Ibrahim and Jordan, the latter of which plays alongside him for Marseille.

Ayew initially began his career as a school kid at the age of ten at Ghanaian club Nania before he returned to France and was snapped up by Marseille’s youth academy at the age of 14. Making his way through the youth ranks, Ayew made his professional debut for Marseille against Valenciennes, coming on as a last minute substitute in 2007. He made his first league start against Lyon soon afterwards and made 13 appearances in all competitions in his first season.

It wasn’t going to be the breakthrough that the young Ghanaian hoped though and due to an influx of attacking players at the club, Ayew was loaned out to Ligue One side Lorient for the 2008/09 campaign, but despite scoring his first and second ever professional goals in the first two months of the season, he would only score one further goal in the campaign.

Still, his international career was on the up, and after initially playing for France’s youth teams because of Ghana’s lack of interest in him, he made his senior debut for the African nation back in August 2007 in a friendly match versus Senegal. During his time on loan at Lorient, he went on to captain Ghana’s U20 side to the FIFA U20 World Cup and to the 2009 African Youth Championships. Ayew has since played prominent roles for the senior team at the 2010 African Cup of Nations and the 2010 World Cup.

Let’s not rush things . There’s still a few weeks to go so another 156 or so wingers will be “linked” as all these guess-all pundits will have it!
Simply think of a winger and he is linked to Liverpool… What a load of tosh!

  • am tired of all this craps that mr,kenny thought he and comolli are toasting around, from january uptill date mr,kenny and comolli have link and contact all the players on earth for now all the players they’ve been going for is out of their hands and other clubs have snatch the players from their [kenny and comolli]reach it’s a pity, for sure i don’t see any top player coming these season to lfc because lfc is out of europe competitions why because the tothenham game that could’ve gave us [lfc]europe chance mr,kenny have failed to win that game which could’ve attract big stars to come to lfc.

      What planet are you on?
      O
Top players don’t want to play in the Europa league…its champions league everyone wants to be in. Thus that’s a NIB issue…KENNY performed miracle to get LFC to finish 6th after the start we had under Hodgson

As for LFC missing our targets…has any team in the EPL signed a single player…NO! Because the transfer window not open yet!

If Liverpool are going to gamble £11m on this guy then why not buy N’Zogbia for more or less the same price. Young proven Premier League player who will need no time to adapt. Ayew is a big risk so for the same money, Kenny and Comolli should be focusing on getting N’Zogbia instead.

Why no mention of his father, the legendary Abedi Ayew Pele? Just curious. This kid’s deliveries from the flanks are something to watch. He plays for a very offensive-minded club, OM, and his play for Ghana has been consistently good. He’s also young, only 21, thus full of potential.
