What does this man give Liverpool FC?

As rumours continue to circulate about Liverpool’s acquisition of the Blackpool midfielder Charlie Adam, more and more fans are beginning to question where exactly he would fit in. Steven Gerrard, Lucas Leiva, Raul Meireles, Jordan Henderson, Jonjo Shelvey and Jay Spearing. These are the names of the current midfielders we could expect to see in the centre of the park for Liverpool next season. All of the above players prefer to play in the central midfield position. Most of them can play elsewhere though, but it is doubtful that they will be as effective as in their natural roles. Just like Charlie Adam, we know he can play a good game of football out on the left but he would be more effective in the centre.

What can Adam offer us that we currently lack? For starters I do not feel that Liverpool have a set piece specialist. Yes, we have Stevie, who when fit can strike a really good free-kick and slot 9 out of 10 penalties into the bottom corner. We have Meireles, who we know has a powerful shot and often shows interest in free-kicks but really doesn’t take many. And also, we have Suarez, he is the latest addition to step up and take free-kicks from close range. Charlie Adam however could be an alternative to these 3 players. His left boot provided last season’s Premier League with some of the finest set pieces. From whipped in corners, to long hanging free-kicks, to net rippling direct free-kicks and even a few unstoppable penalties. Some may say it is ludicrous to bring in a player just for his set pieces, obviously this is not all Adam has to offer us. But, every one of the teams that finished above us do have an out-and-out set piece specialist. Secondly, although I feel that this is not something we lack, the Tangerine’s captain has great big match temperament. He showed us again and again last season that he is not phased by big games and big names.

The Scotsman played 35 out of 38 premier league games for Blackpool last season, scoring 12 goals and bagging 8 assists. This, one goal in every four games record, is considered good for any central midfielder in the Premier League. Adam was the combined top goal scorer with Campbell for Blackpool’s season, in all competitions. Thirdly, as Liverpool continue their search for a left midfielder you have to question, will only one be enough? We are currently looking into Downing and Mata as wide left options and it seems all the previous hype about NZogbia (one of my favourites) has died down. We do have Maxi and Cole who can also play on the left but neither of them are left-footed and look good wingers, both of them always look to cut inside instead of running down the line to put in a good cross. Adam could be a very useful backup, after a Downing or Mata, on the left and would do better there than any of Liverpool’s current options.

after alonso,s departure we ave been scratching our head for someone to switch a diognal 50 yard pass when the opposition closes us..what lucas does is he keeps the ball simple by knocking it to one of our diffenders or to the neareest midfielder in vision..what adam can offers with bit of space he can wip in a beauty of a long range pass which entirely can change the tempo of the game or can lead to a swift counter attack…also he is technically good than mereles and lucas..hes also physical and can be used to win 50-50 midfield battles..afterall he can see a pass and an expert setpiece taker..SIGN HIM

I think kd and comoil r too slow in tying up sm deals which looks certain, we r losing out on potential recruits who want to play for us. C adams and scott dann could hv bn signed 2wks ago b4 other clubs join. Move fast guyz the lads r good. Reds 4 lyf.

I seriously don’t think he’ll fit in here. He disappeared for 18 months at Rangers, no disrespect to the SPL but that worries me. He can only play effectively in a 3 man midfield for me so are we really going back to the days of playing one striker? We saw how that worked out before we became over reliant on a player who couldn’t be bothered when things went sour. So where could Adam play? Is he better than Stevie? No, better than Raul? No, Lucas? No, Spearing? Yes at the moment, Shelvey? At the moment Jordan Henderson? Not for me so at best he’s 5th choice central midfielder. While he might get a few more goals from free kicks I don’t see him improving us and if the mancs want him they’re welcome to him as far as I’m concerned.

  • not sure of lfc signing charlie adam because the managers are not seriouse of signing quality players, charlie adam should better sign for man.utd if they comes for his service.

Charlie Adam for me is the biggest signing of the summer, Liverpool have had some fantastic players over the years and some average ones, but tell me when was the last time we had a player who could take corners and set pieces like Adam , gerrard is one of, if not the best midfielder in the world, but haw many times does he hit the first man, asdid alonso, now we have the likes of Carroll and get gerrard in the box and let’s score some 92nd min free kicks or corners, it could be the difference between breaking defensive teams down and winning 1-0 on a cold Monday night, Instead of drawing once again, and missing out by 2 silly draws.
