Charlie Adam has agreed to move to Anfield for an undisclosed fee thought to be around £9m, a profit of about £8m on the £500,000 Blackpool paid for Adam just two years.

The 25-year-old’s price tag is fully justified after his classy performances in the Tangerines midfield last season which earned him a nomination for PFA Players’ Player of the Year and made him an integral player in Blackpool’s fated campaign to stay in the Premier League.

Many fans forget that the man that actually first brought Charlie Adam to England was not current manager Ian Holloway but was in fact the former Blackpool caretaker manager Tony Parkes.

He had signed Adam from Rangers on a 6 month loan deal in February 2009. Without this signing it is unlikely Adam would be about to sign for Liverpool as he had fallen out of favour at Rangers and was just looking to play some first team football. Instead after an impressive loan spell, Blackpool were determined to acquire Adam that summer and finally succeeded with a £500,000 bid in August 2009, smashing the club’s record transfer fee in the process.

The free-kick specialist who had been part of the youth set up at Dundee, moved to Ibrox in 2003. He then spent much of his early career out on loan, firstly at Ross County for the 2004/05 season and then at St Mirren for the 2005/06 season where he won both the First Division and Scottish Challenge Cup for the Buddies. He returned to Rangers in 2006 and soon became a regular under Paul Le Guen and then Walter Smith, picking up the Young Player of the Year award in 2007 while earning himself a new five year deal. However he fell out of favour for the 2009 season and after only making nine appearances, he was loaned out to the Championship to gain some more experience. It turned out to be a life-changing move for Charlie Adam.

Although it did not start that well for Adam as he was sent off on his debut in the Seasider’s 3-2 home defeat to Doncaster and he even spent time playing in the reserves. However his presence was soon felt and it became clear that he was going to be a prominent loan signing for Blackpool and caretaker manager Parkes.
