Reds will need to learn from past mistakes over Suarez

Livepool’s Luis Suarez was named the most valuable player in the Copa America as he led Uruguay to their 15th title, scoring once and creating another in their 3-0 final victory over Paraguay.

His dynamic, all-action displays for his country have confirmed his importance as the main man at Anfield as they aim to achieve a top four finish. However they need to make sure they learn from past mistakes with Torres and give Suarez a reasonable amount of time to recover before throwing him back into the first team picture.

He has been given a three-week break before Liverpool’s Premier League campaign starts against Sunderland but there have been reports that he cut short his break to start preparations for the new season. As much as the player wants to get back into the game it is important to make sure he has recovered first.

Medical staff at Liverpool’s Melwood training base will assess the player to test if he is ready to play when he return after this short break. Suarez had a two-week break before the South American competition started and he also had a seven-week ban from November to January after biting an opponent while playing for Ajax which was soon followed by the Dutch winter break. This means he is different to Torres who faced three consecutive seasons with very little rest which ultimately seems to have affected his form.

Torres went three summers without a proper break after the European Championships, the Confederations Cup and ahead of last year’s season, the World Cup and he still does not look to have recovered with his form lagging last year as he moved to Stamford Bridge.

One thing people keep forgetting is before he signed for liverpool he was sitting a 7 match ban for biting a player! In my eyes that is plenty of rest as that would consist of 1-2 months! Yeah he played in the Copa America but having that much time out and playing only half a season (if that) at liverpool he is probably itching to get going

It’s all for nowt anyway. If we don’t make the CL (which we won’t), he’ll be in Spain next season anyway. And we’ll be saying ‘Didn’t Kenny do good business? He sold Torres & Suarez for 100 million and only spent 35 million on an England international striker?’

    • Gerrardious says:

wat are u talking about? pls leave the discussion to matured minds.

      • Doen't Really Mata says:

I know you are, but what am I?

        • Gerrardious says:

simply because he said he was a boyhood Barca fan, u think he’ll run away after 1 full season. so much for ur pessimism.

        • Felderkirk says:

Not only that. We’ve been down this road before with Torres, Alonso and Mascherano. Suarez’s stock is at it’s highest ever point. As we clearly seem intent on making him do all the creative work this season by not even attempting to sign anyone from outside of England who might have a hint if talent to compliment him, it would be fair to anticipate a move from Luis should the opportunity arise and we don’t make the CL. Come back in a year – if we don’t get into the top 4 and he’s not linked with Barça then you can have a dig. Until then, I think the other comments on this page would suggest that YOU’RE the one who’s being immature.

        • ben says:

you don’t have a clue what ur on about, Gerrardious he isnt a lfc fan he supports manure so don’t worry.

      • Lfc4LifeR says:

Why should he leave? Lol it’s not his fault you can’t See that far ahead…

Your entitled your opinion and so is everyone else.

      • George says:

@Gerrardious: From your response, it’s obvious that you are the immature one.

  • Einstein says:

If I can recover from a weekend long drinking binge in 12 hours, Suarez can recover from healthy exercise in the same and come out of it fitter.

I honestly don’t know where people get all this burnout crap from. It’s just an excuse for some later dip in form which all strikers have.

    Rubbish article, btw.

  • stan howard says:

suarez Must play from day one, what is going on, the teams we are picking have no logic to them, i can only think that sports scientists are running our club, suarez previous manager said we will have no problem with luis he comes back from internationals and gets right on with it,kennyn better get a grip and fast we need a team with a mission not a mismash off duds and dopes.

    • ben says:

stan howard me and chuck have been ridiculing your comments for ages, and your only making it easier for us everyday, give the boy a rest, I don’t see you playing 30 90 minute long football matches,a gainst top footballers. With the way this boy (Suarez) works, he deserves a rest

  • ode says:

we are making the cl you fool

  • PaulDobbin says:

The article also doesnt account for Torres’ stop/start seasons over the last couple of years. He has spent a fair amount of time out with troublesome hamstring injuries. Time that he will have benefited from.

  • Doen't Really Mata says:

    Really? ….. Really?

    • ben says:

great come back… what are you? 5yrs old. Get a life Saddo. Do us all a favour… and go suck ur mum

  • stan howard says:

we should be playing those available who we will start the season with in every game we can, what have these so called sports scientists done for us ? gerrrard still out, carroll took an age, kelly took an age, shelvey took a long time, agger took an age. are they far too over cautious ?
oh and agger throws the ball inti the area playing for denmark but we dont use him ?

  • stan howard says:

sack the sports scientists and get the magic sponge out, failing that the cortizone injections.

  • stan howard says:

we have the best young player in the world and he seems to have dissapeared, instead of playing useless players aganst galatasary etc we should be playing the fabulous untouchable raheem stirling – are they all mad !

    • Gerrardious says:

Howard, u’re beginning to sound like Sterling is ur younger broda. why dont u wait till Jan to see if he’ll gets some game time or not.
besides, who’s to say he’s ready to step up??

    • ben says:

I agree that Raheem Sterling is amazing but we shouldnt rush him, he is 19 after all. What happens if we do another Michael Owen. We play him too early and 5 years later hes crap. oNLY GOOD THING THAT CAME FROM oWEN WAS HE NOW PLAYS CRAP FOR MANURE

  • J J says:

Suarez is your typical South American footballer who loves to play and not moan about being tired
we need the team to gel and to start winning trophies and get back into the Champions league next season else the Spainish clubs will be after him thats my major worry over Suarez not him being tired.

  • Doen't Really Mata says:

I agree – I’d love to see Sterling get a chance on the right flank in the pre-season games. Also, if we were just going to play the likes of Poulsen in these apparently ‘meaningless’ games, then I’d have liked to have given Suso a run out too. 2 players with a spark of magic.

Also, this idea that the pre-season games aren’t very important is ludicrous. United copped on a long time ago that a good run of form going into the new season is vital to maintain the correct winning mental attitude. This season, the other big sides have realised that too.

We, on the other hand, seem to be treating it all as a giant shop window for the players we’re trying to get rid of, as well as an opportunity to ‘break the Asian market’.

And this is just one of a number of reasons why I find the idea of us making the Champions League next season a little dubious. I agree that I think it’s within our capabilities, but I fear we’re going about it the wrong way. And I also think that by doing what we’re doing, we’re relying as much on Arsenal and Spurs being shit as we are on getting the most out of our disjointed squad.

  • GG says:

The mistake I’m worried about most is LFC becoming heavily dependent on Luis Suarez. In the game with Galatasaray, there was no creative spark in the side. Yes, Kenny played a second string side but the absence of creativity was alarming. If we think that will be resolved with Suarez in the side, the one-man dependence syndrom will return again! Dalglish and Comolli should think about fixing this problem. Most urgently though, they need to inject new but proven talent to the back four. The LFC defense is leaking and this is worrisome for LFC’s ambitions. John Henry should insist on something being done in the CB and LB areas.

    • ben says:

Have you perhaps forgotten about charlie adam and downing being signed, we have truckloads of cretivity, which we don’t use in pre season, for fear of ‘burning them out’.

  • percy says:

most of the comments on the article have been spot on,i agree that if we do not change our strategy and some of the blind follower mentality that surrounds our club now, mainly coz of this king kenny knows best stuf ,for the coming season we definitely wont make the top 4! I have never seen players being blamed like this to be honest, if i’m not mistaken a player gets picked buy the manager and the manager chooses the formating and playing style!! Question the manager and not say things like i feel sorry for kenny coz of the players he has to work with,i mean what kind of cow manure is that!!

  • stan howard says:

the4 other day i wrote about what i hoped our team would play like and achieve this season, good team spirit, committment, never say die attitude, attacking home and away, getting the best out of carroll etc etc. after watching us against galatasary we were exactly 100% the opposite. no excuse for it.

    • Lfc4LifeR says:

Since that game, Iv identified a substance called crystal meth which now enables me to watch our games whilst chewing on my hands with good reason….

Ps I’m typing with my toes :/

    • ben says:

What no excuse apaart from the fact that it was pre season, jumping at shadows springs to mind.

  • ben says:

LFC will thrash Valerenga, but i feel we should play raheem sterling and eccleston.

  • Ashok says:

I love king kenny but i fèel that his love for overrated english plyrs can do us harm. Mata arda turan, dudshak, n zobia, navas, gervinho, marin, jeffren saurez were all available but we have bought overrated english 27 year old downing. Pls dont say premier league experience, kota system, nobody wants to play for us.

  • mrbing says:

guys dont go on about the kids stirling, coady, suso, you have only seen them play in youth matches and reserve games so GET REAL playing against premiership teams is a different story, if these kids were so special they would have gotten the chance just like owen, fowler and other great kids like rooney and wilshere
