With Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain completing his dream transfer to Arsenal, some will be concerned that making such a ‘big’ move at a relatively young age may turn out to be the wrong decision. While a number of young players, such as Wayne Rooney, have been able to make the necessary ‘step up’ after their big club moves, it seems that a vast number also fail to make any real impact whatsoever, and these ‘big’ transfers can often turn out to be something of a disaster.
In light of Chamberlain’s move I have compiled a selection of 10 footballers who, at an early stage in their careers, signed for one of the ‘big’ European clubs at the time. For some, these transfers turned out to be far more damaging to their careers than could be anticipated, while others were able to move on to other clubs that were still competing at the top level.
