Don’t let events spoil your weekend fun

After all that’s gone on since last Saturday, it really puts the importance of the first week of the new Premier League season into perspective: in the grand scale of things, it just isn’t that important. However, like many people have pointed out since the England friendly was cancelled on Wednesday, and the Blues’ game against Spurs on Saturday, the worst thing that we can do at the moment is break from normality. The more we keep doing anything normal and ‘every day’, the sooner all of this unrest will be put down because the last thing we need now is to let the scum and dregs that have ruined this week for the nation ruin the one thing that brings everybody together: our national game.

That’s why I’m looking our newest signing of Jose Enrique as a massive plus point for Liverpool fans this week. As things seem to be dying down over the past couple of days, the Spaniards signing should remind us that this weekend should be the most important date in all Liverpool fan’s calendars; it’s been a long, hard summer, there’s been rumours galore but we’ve done some good business and look to be moving a lot of the deadwood on.

Another reason I’m excited about Enrique’s signing is that he’ll help to further shore up a slightly leaky defence with a lot of Premier League experience and a fair bit more height that any of our other left-backs. He couples this with an ability to bomb it down the wing, using his sprinters’ pace and the strength of a bull, if his nickname ‘el Toro’ is to be believed.

Adding all these attributes to an already exciting looking line up of new signings (with the two we already got our hands on in January) and the start of a new season should be an immensely exciting time for us. And I believe it still should be; with the other 9 Premier League games still going ahead, all football fans everywhere shouldn’t let events this week spoil their weekend football, particularly not Reds fans and we should get out there and support our new (and old) boys and let the degenerates of society know that their lack of morals and pride in their city won’t stop the rest of us proper Scousers from showing pride in our team.

I think I speak for everyone when I say followers of the EPL all across the world have been taken aback greatly by the events that have unfolded in London and other cities. English society has disappointed all of us, and it is bewildering to imagine those who take such pride and joy in their collective belief (support for the clubs is the greatest example of that) could let their nation down like this. But then I think all of us are also certain that this is an absolute aberration, and as the saying goes one rotten apple spoils the whole barrel, this probably is a prime example of that. The youth being misled to act this way is concerning, but like the author of the article I also believe we must not consider this face of English society as the lasting one. It must be and is an aberration, lets hope the clubs do everything that they can to rally their followers and move on the path of normalcy. This great game must not be tarnished by what has transpired, and as supporters of the greatest club in the world we all have the responsibility to show faith and solidarity with the lovers of the game and English society in general, because without ANY DOUBT they are far far better than what these thugs are proving it to be.
